I changed some speakers (swapped in some older Boston Acoustics floor speakers as my surrounds and switched to a new Denon AVR-2105 receiver. Lead vocals now sound muffled and/or fuzzy. I used the built-in auto-setup and although it is worse with DSP modes, I hear the problem in both stereo and Dolby IIx. It does not seem to be related to a given speaker. Could this be a power issue? Any recommendations as to how to diagnose and fix this? Overall the sound is clear and detailed but this is a fatal flaw! It is a small room, approx 12 X 12 with my solid JBL L5s as Fronts. I've got banana plugs on everything so its pretty easy to swap in other spare receivers I have.

too many variables make it difficult-
Swap one thing back to old -
then the other and see what you hear...

Welcome! Mr. Knicks

it is in the processing of your receiver. All of those DSP modes, time shifts between speakers...etc. Review your owners manual for openers and keep experimenting as best you can.

How can the sound be "clear and detailed" if vocals are "fuzzy and muffled?"

Maybe you should go back to your original configuration and swap one component in at a time until you discover the source of the problem. If your Boston Acoustics floor speakers sound okay with your original receiver, then the problem is most likely the new Denon AVR-2105 receiver. On the other hand, if the Denon AVR-2105 receiver sounds good with your original speakers, then the problem is likely to be the Boston Acoustics floor speakers. You should probably do these tests without any special DSP modes engaged.

Good luck,
John Elison

Changing several things at ONCE is a recipe for confusion, if not disaster.

Good idea. Go to square one and reboot.

I think it was in the phasing or the time shifts. I simplified the speaker layout to help the auto-adjust, repositioned the microphone, reran the auto-setup and (with some beginner's luck) all is very well. Thanks for the tips all! I have also trimmed my moustache and taken some cold medicine and that is helping as well. I did get lucky this time changing more than one thing at a time but next time I"ll be more cautions. Thanks all!

Hearing loss. Had yours checked recently?

I'm surprised how few audiophiles get their hearing tested regularly.....
