At similar volume levels...no level meter..but my ears.... It seems that that solid state amplifier is just better sounding...

Amps are still not screwdrivers.

In horseshoes and hand grenades. There is no way to tell without measuring. Forget that, which amp do you like over most volume settings from soft to loud?

I have experienced models of either type that do poorly at low levels. My first "real" system included an AR Integrated that was positively horrible. Surprisingly, I found the same to be true with a Conrad-Johnson MV-75a. A Threshold Stasis I was using at the time was significantly better in that regard.

On the other hand, I find that 300 watt VTL tube monoblocks resolve very well down to a whisper driving the stats.

You tried one SS amp that sounds better to you vs one tube amp? Please elaborate on what amps (brand, model, specs, etc.) you tried, and the rest of your setup (source component(s), preamp, speakers, etc.).

I can give you several examples where my tube amps have sounded better than solid state. And the other way around. I've had several solid-state amps that sound better than some tube amps. Without any specifics, your comment is pointless.

Iczerman, despite repeatedly being asked what equipment you are comparing you have repeatedly failed to respond with specifics. If you want informed responses to real questions you have to do your part by supplying basic information.

I shall give your question long thoughtful consideration. As a working hypothesis I will assume that the two watt SS model is a Fisher-Price amp you salvaged from a singing dancing frog with a broken leg, but I am without a clue about the tube model or the speakers being used.
I dream of an America where a chicken can cross the road without having it's motives questioned.
