its been a long time since i've been in the market for audio components and ive previously only bought a/v receivers not dedicated amplifiers, d/a converters, etc etc etc. so now that my ex wife has all my old stuff i get to get new stuff. I'm certainly not an audiophile like most of you guys but i do appreciate quality, function, simplicity and asthetics. my current house is wired for speakers in the living room, dining room and outside on the patio. i have a theater room so this post is strictly looking for a solution for those areas. there are paired, in wall speakers in each of those rooms. i'll need a speaker switch but i would really like to add a subwoofer to the mix. with that in mind i am looking at these options: TEAC AX-501 (too new to post links, sorry) TEAC AI-501DA TEAC AI-3011DA My questions: 1. What is USB streaming? is that simply connecting an ipod to the unit for playing music? 2. Is a DA converter required for the 501 or is that simply a sound quality preference? 3. How would i add a subwoofer to the mix with the 501 or 501DA when they don't have subwoofer outs 4. The 301DA has everything i want but its a little low on the power and it doesn't have those pretty analog meters...does anyone know of a unit that is like the 301DA but has more power and those types of meters? thank you for your help and happy thanksgiving!

Okay, I'll take a crack at it. First thing, those meters are cool looking. Streaming usually means that the digital source music file is stored remotely someplace. Either an on-premise server or in the cloud. Key is those source files are digital, and you need some kind of digital to analog converter (dac). The straight 501 appears to be a straight up, line level only, stereo integrated amp with no dac capability. You'd need a standalone dac with the 501 to convert those streamed digital files to analog. The 501DA has a dac built in, so no need for separate dac unit. I did not read all the spec copy on the 501DA, but it sure looks like it has no network connectivity. You'd then also need a device to either via wire or wirelessly get those files from on-premise music server or cloud storage to the dac. The market is crowded with devices that do this. If all you really want to do is hook up yer iPhone/pad and play music from it, all you need is a cable that has a stereo mini jack on one end and RCA connectors on the other. Bluejeanscable.com, among others, will custom make this cable for you at a very reasonable price, and you could go with the straight AX-501 - no need for any dac of any kind. As for the sub-woofer, there's too many options to try to cover them here ... besides, I don't know that much about subs as I've never had the need for one. Maybe somebody else will chime in on that.

PS. Texas legend? which one? The chupacabra? Just kidding. What part of Texas? I'm in DFW area.
