Finally gave away my Denon 4806 receiver. End of an era. Donated it to a local Goodwill.

I did not use the Denon 4806 enough to justify buying another.
I just finally realized I am not using it, why keep it.
From retail $2,499, I paid $1,450 for it new at a dealer blow out sale. It is now worth $200. Maybe. Some happy Goodwill customer will probably get it for $29.

I am still using the Denon DVD 5910 player I bought at the same time. It still works fine. So I guess I am happy with it.

Are you giving up listening to music? I hope I don't ever get that old, but you never know. ;-)

Good luck,
John Elison

So being retired I listen to music most of the day every day!
The receiver was for surround duties with the TV.. but I found I almost never used it. So I decided to clean house.
True I could have sold it (and the Canton speakers) but I decided I would rather give them away.
(I took the Canton CD300 pair, and 3 Canton CD360 The number part may be mixed up, the tall front pair, then a smaller middle and two rear surround which had the same internals as the large ones, took them to Goodwill today.)

Bath? try my Sony plasma 42" I paid over $4,000. for it way back when,, now geez.., posted on August 27, 2015 at 11:39:24
When I bought the Sony plasma TV it was the cat's meow.
Only the Pioneer top of the line was better IMO. (and those cost $6K or 7K
So I paid $4,000 plus for a 42" 750p flatscreen.
Today? Hell I could buy a 70" for that kind of money.
My Sony was state of the art when I bought it.. Now, it still works great, but it is worth $500 tops.

I still have and use a Denon 5803. I use it in my home theater system. But, I only use the analog inputs from my Oppo.
I can't see at this time getting something else.

Ah, I'm retired, too. I have my audio system integrated with my video system, but I don't use surround either. I'm perfectly happy with two channel stereo for both audio and video. My OPPO BDP-105D is the heart of my entertainment system but I used to enjoy playing records, though not so much anymore. Digital has gotten to sound very good nowadays and vinyl is such a hassle.

You've got it EASY compared to the people who bought the SONY Rear Projection stuff in either tranmissive LCD OR SXRD (LCOS).
ALL are or were defective because of the PLASTIC filters used in the light engine. Sony lost several class action lawsuits.
I'm not going into a big, long 'thing', but Sony is/was a MULTIPLE patent holder on light engine design yet didn't use heat-proof GLASS filters.
My set? A 60" SXRD cost about 2500$ new and was essentially worth the scrap out of the Light Engine to a rebuilder (+75$ to me) while SONY gave me a 'deal' on a new 55" LCD set which I SOLD the next day, new in box, for about 1100$ Net + of about 550$ or so.

I now have a Panasonic Plasma. Terrific set, but No More Plasmas. OLED is the future since Plasma CAN'T (apparently) be scaled to a 4k display.

Home TV market MUST be incredibly CutThroat. Prices keep dropping, as do Margins. Pioneer, than Panasonic, Samsung and Now LG have all dropped Plasma. Goners.

By the time the 2nd or 3rd generation of OLED comes along, I'll 'upgrade'.

To me, 4K is overkill for home use....unless you have a 70"+ screen maybe.

Test reports I've seen say save your money, and I've discovered that
at normal viewing distances, it looks the same as 1080 to me. Prices
will have to come way down for me to switch...and if my 1080 quits :)

WITH the new hardware will come a LOT of software. NEW movies will almost by default HAVE to be in 4k. Even if projectors in movie theaters are NOT upgraded, the home penetration of the new tech will almost make it mandatory to shoot movies in that format. The NEW GoPro supports 4k.

And yes, I suppose it IS true that the eye is only so good and at some point screen size VS 'lines' will be an issue. Even 720 looked good to me, on 50" screens.
I don't have space for a 70" or larger. No way.

But that doesn't mean I won't lust after an OLED display. Terrific BLACKS, great color and a larger color space than current NTSC specs. Very attractive idea.

You're talking about me too, friend. After researching what was the best (way back when) big screen, I settled on the Sony 55" rear projection sxrd, as my "final" tv purchase. Nope. It went bad 6 mos. after purchase - yep - bad light engine. Sony replaced it with a diff. model (odd, they didn't make the one I originally bought, anymore. Hmmm.) Anyway, that one went bad. And what did I get from the class action suit? Something like $100 off of any Sony product. Yeah, right. Never any Sony product for me anymore.

Yep. LIGHT ENGINE was the culprit. I had the 60" and it was incredible. NO sign of the space between cells (Vias is the name) while action was crystal clear.
VERY film-like picture.

The problem? PLASTIC lenses in the 3-color light engine. (RGB)

Don't forget that manufacturers change models More Often than MOST people change underwear.
But it's also clear that SONY never DID a 'clean sheet' light engine redesign even after they KNEW about the problem. And its horrendous magnetude.

I got an 800 series LCD 55" set for about 500$ or so DELIVERED to my door. I opened the box to confirm the panel was intact than SOLD IT FOR about 2x what I paid for it. It was the LAST of that model years sets. The next years sets were a slight upgrade, per usual practice.
Part of the deal was to agree NOT to sue 'em. AND they got the SR# sticker from MY old set so I couldn't claim it again.
However, in looking back, had I NOT signed my rights away, I believe people like US could have successfully sued since we were NEVER notified of ANY class action lawsuit which was an 'opt out' type. \

I think we would have prevailed in INDIVIDUAL small claims suits.

I tried selling the set as a 'fixer' with CLEAR instructions as to the problem. I tried selling the carcas to the local (several, actually) TV repair guys. I finally sold the LAMP and the old lamp housing AND the unused REMOTE to some guy for 20$. (I had converted to logitech)

Now look at the TV market? NO MORE Plasma. LCD sets are 'commodity' cheap. Sell the Sizzle. I'd wait for the 2nd or 3rd generation of OLED before I revisited TV Land.

It lasted 1 1/2 years before the light engine went all blotchy on me. By then, Sony lost the class action law suits, and they replaced it (light engine) for free. It lasted a few more years until the green and purple blobs reappeared.
I ended up replacing it with a 65" Panasonic ZT60 plasma.

And ALL because of Plastic Filters.
If Sony had made 'em from Heat Proof Glass, we wouldn't be having this chat.

My old one went upstairs (a rather laborious trip) to the grandkids play room where they use it for wii (sp?) & Mario Bros. games. The mostly weird greenish screen doesn't seem to bother them. They just like the big pic in the small room!

Software will be playing catch-up it seems for awhile. I really
do hope that they just stop at the 4K level and call it good and
let the software catch up.

I like plasma a lot (viewing angle, etc) but it's obsolete now.

I don't know if a good 1080p Plasma is actually 'obsolete' but certainly not current. I wanted one of the last run of Panasonic '60' series Plasma sets. I wasnt' worried about 4k THAN and I'm not worried NOW.

I suspect MOST new movies are both 4k and digitial. Not digitized film. (scanned)

If my SONY NEX-7 is any example of how good a 1080 film can be, and boy does it look good on my TV, than the 4k professional stuff will be amazing. The stuff coming over the small dish is compressed to the point where HD doesn't look MUCH better than an UPSAMPLED DVD from a premium player. Like my old OPPO 981HD.

Is there such a thing yet as 4k 3D? I think 3D fell flat. I hope.

I'm too cheap to do that :(
I'm still using my Denon 1801 in one system for receiver duties lol. I got it off ubid if I remember correctly.

I totally understand getting rid of excess stuff though. If you're not using it at all get it the heck out.
