I have a 19 year old Music Reference RM9mkII and through various moves, cats and shipping for repairs, the transformers have been dinged and scratched over the years. If I ever want to sell the amp, the value will be somewhat reduced unless they're restored.

I contacted a local paint and powder coat company and they wouldn't touch it because they would want to remove the transformer covers which doesn't seem feasible on this amp.

Suggestions or advice or do I just leave well enough alone? Thanks!

The transformers are potted into the cans.
they can be removed - carefully and making sure not to mix them up - channel a versus b, etc.
however the cans were originally deep drawn and then powder coated.
that is a hard finish to replace w/o a strip- which is not recommended w/ x-formers inside...
you can try an epoxy / bondo type of filler and then re-paint...

Having said all that- do you REALLY want to sell it?

I would leave well enough alone and let any new owner decide.

I would use black permanent marker to disguise the scratches. It will not cover them up but will make them less unslightly. It will take a few coats to have the shinny metal covered but at least it will make them not stand out as much....

I vote for leaving well enough alone too. You will have other issues with this amp soon enough that are not of a cosmetic nature that will need to be addressed. One that comes to mind is the plastic bias pots for the input tubes. If you haven't replaced these at least once already, you are lucky.

Try posting this on Vintage Asylum. There is a lot of cosmetic restoration advice over there.

...It seems you have made no decision to sell the amp.

Until you do make a decision to sell why bother navel gazing about something which may or may not be an issue?

Lastly, without a pic it is hard to know the aesthetic defect of the amp, but irrespective, I doubt the cost and bother of tarting up a 19 year old amp will be recovered in the sale.

In other words, just leave it as it is.

Leave it be. Taking that apart is asking for a hard time. Unless there is a total restoration involved.
