Last week I won on ebay a Rotel RA-985BX integrated amplifier. I paid $183 including shipping. It arrived Tuesday and I have had two evenings of listening to it. On both evenings it sounded fine for about 3 hours, and after three hours started making noise in the left channel. The noise sounds like what you would get listening to a really weak FM station. The noise level is constant, unaffected by the volume control setting, and is present with all sources. Only the mute eliminates the noise. I turned the amp off for about 15 minutes to let it cool off. When I turned it back on, the noise was gone for a while, but returned when the amp had been running for about a half hour. I asked the seller for a refund, and his initial offer was for a partial refund of $100. A local repair shop, without seeing the amp said the it might cost $100-150 to fix it, but the cost could be much higher. I don't want to sink good money after bad into this amp. It was an $800 amp when new, but is now about 15 years old. I would be willing to spend a couple hundred to get it fixed, but much more than that and I am thinking I would be better off with a different amp. The amp will be driving a pair of Paradigm Studio 60 v.2 speakers. I will use it with a Yamaha RX-V2300, which will I use for HT and FM. The Yamaha has pre-outputs which I connect to the integrated. I had been using a Denon PMA-520 for music. The reason for getting the Rotel was to get improved 2 channel performance for music, which it does provide when it is not making the noise. So should I take the $100 and get the Rotel repaired, or start over? Any advice from the experts here would be greatly appreciated.

I would take the hundred and pay to get it fixed. In the event you decide later not to keep it, you will have a known working amp to sell.

It sounds like perhaps some capacitors need to be replaced. The repair shouldn't be all that expensive.

I took the $100. Now I have another question., posted on March 6, 2015 at 08:54:25

I am using this amp only to drive the front speaker in my HT setup. I tried hooking the HT receiver to the main amp inputs of the Rotel, and this by-passes the noise problem, which is in the pre-amp. The thing I lose with this arrangement is that it does not allow the CD player to go directly to the Rotel; it must go through the receiver on its way to the Rotel amp. Is there any danger in using the power amp only of the Rotel? Is it bad for the integrated to have a defective pre-amp idling while the power amp is working?
