My modest amp on growth hormone

A few hours out of the box and it sounds quite nice.
At last, a space heater with remote that sounds great!Figured why let all those tubes just sit in the shoebox collection and popped in what I had.
Only read about how nice it sounds with stock tubes and popped them in during setup.
Can't be worse than stock because all I hear is...ahhh music.
Guess I'll have to break down and get 4 more KT77's. When does it stop?

Does that have 8 power tubes? How many watts output?

It has the switchable UL/triode feature, so according to the specs with the 34s somewhere around 70UL 40triode.

It can take the new 150's and I would imagine it bumps it a bit. Specs only show the 120's @85.
The wattage thing wasn't a factor for me.Still nice having the extra juice.
No plans soon for an upgrade of 8 which would be $$ouch!

Originally had plans for an extravagant cart splurge glad I didn't.
But eventually I will give in and indulge..but not anytime soon.
Forgot how nice it is to have a remote also!

I glanced at that new Prima Luna in a magazine ad because most of their other integrated amps are under powered for my Thiel speakers. I'm not using the Thiels at the moment but I have to keep them in mind. Once I get the basement finished and have my dedicated listening room again, the Thiels will be hungry for some power. ;-)

How does the new 'high power' Prima Luna compare to your old one? I don't recall if the remote does input switching or just basic Volume Up/Down?

Yup, KT120s or KT150s might be fun to try someday but they're EXPENSIVE, especially for 8 of them!!

My current speakers are pretty average(89)sensitivity and the old amp(40 watts)didn't appear to struggle.

If I had a bigger budget, I would have gone full force-the Dialogue HP separates-monoblocs 175 watts/channe(KT120)l-that's cookin' with gas!
$800 bucks in glass Yikes!

The remote could double as a weapon.Nice heavy chunky aluminum full function-input,mute, tri/UL switching and no plastic parts.

Listen to HP series if you get a chance. Impressive for the price.

Thanks for the info. Enjoy your new toy! - nt, posted on December 12, 2014 at 11:34:47

I imagine the 'old' amp may be too expensive for the guy I answered in another forum (see link) but thought I'd mention it. He's looking for a good ~$600 amp to 'tame' his speakers a bit, my first thought (SS) would be a Marantz integrated, but turning him on to tubes would be a good thing too.

Please forgive me if the price is way low, I have no idea what used PL amps are going for (or even new ones).

BTW, also, CONGRATULATIONS and happy listening with the new amp! :D

PS: Whoops, I think ~$600 may be way low for this amp, sorry! OH well. I suggested a used ProLogue One to him, seems more in his intended price range.

If you can convince him that coughing up another $600 would be an investment in good sound, then have him check out my listing on AA trader.

I don't want to plug my own ad here, I will just say Yes, I'm selling and thanks!

Well, he hasn't "responded" to my postings about a Cayin TA-30 and the Prologue One, but if he does and sounds open to investing a bit more (which would likely be worth it) I'll send him your way!

His original post mentioned a NAD BEE integrated and a budget of $600 to power some Klipsch RB 61 II bookshelf speakers ... ah hell, here's a link, hope it's OK to mention other forums in this one (as I did in that one).

Seems to me that the PrimaLuna (One or Two or whatever) would possibly be a very good match to 'tame' the RB 61s a little and still be plenty of power, AND be possibly better sounding than other choices ... plus be more user friendly than the Cayin for first-time tube amp users.

Yeah, read the link. Doesn't seem he will stray from his budget. He might be expecting way more performance than what $600 will buy?

I don't really know, but think he's looking for a good match with his present speakers for $600. I have no idea if the NAD will be a match, I haven't heard NAD equipment nor read any reviews.

I do think he needs a 'mellower' sounding amp, so thought of the Marantz integrated (which may be somewhat mellow? but maybe not enough) and tubes.

I would venture that a ProLogue One may fit the bill, in sonics and maybe price, but wouldn't have any tone controls for him to play with.

I made my suggestions (to him) and can only wish him the best of luck ...

Dagogo will be out with a review of the power amp version shortly (advance word is very impressive).

Stereophile is doing a review of the integrated.
