Audio Design PM-100 Stereo Preamp?

Hi

First time poster , I don't know much about Hi-Fi gear, so bear with me if some of my questions seem amateur.

I purchased an AUDIO DESIGN PM-100 Stereo Preamp and a AUDIO DESIGN PA-100 Amplifier yesterday and I want to know if there is anyone here familiar with those models? It is a Canadian company, and these pieces look to be from the mid to late 70s.

I am trying to get the Preamp working, so I hooked up my Technics 1200 turntable (with a Stanton 680-II cartridge, low end I know) to the Phono input (MM) on the pre (there are 2 inputs for phono, one is MC and one is MM). I am bypassing the PowerAmp and am running right out of the Tape Out into a patchbay which runs to a pair of EVENT 20/20 powered speakers.

The problem is the signal is barely audible (pretty much nothing) , even when I plug in phones and even when I try running the output through the main outs. Is there something I am doing wrong? Are there special cables or a specific type of turntable cartridge that I need?

I understand this is a "newbie" question but any information would be very helpful, as I want to see whether I need to get this thing fixed or whether I need to buy new accessories to make it work properly.

 Running the pre from the tape output won't quite bring it up to line level. The line stage on the pre adds about 20db of gain at full volume. It's possible there just isn't enough gain running into the patchbay. Try using the main outs.
I think you will be quite surprised at how good these pieces are. Especially the power amp. The preamp not so much, simply because of the parts used. It was pretty much a budget item. The amp however will put out a very nice 100 watts. It too though is a victim of the parts of the time. Cheap jacks, binding posts. It also had two common problems. Don't short the speaker leads, and the input coupling caps usually are no good.
You are correct, they were made in Kitchener ON, in the late 70's. A lot of dealers that sold Dayton Wright speakers sold the Audio Design as well.

Does anyone have a manual or a schematic for an Audio Design PM 100 pre-amplifier? I have just purchased one and would like to have some information on it.

 We brought in one preamp and one power amp at our store (and it's true, we did sell the Dayton Wright XG8 speakers and the D-W preamp(s) ). I can't really offer much help, unfortunately. We found them unreliable ... If I remember right I think we had to eat them because they failed on us ... and I personally didn't find any sonic reason to support the line, since alternatives existed (including the D-W preamps, which I liked and considered buying).

I wish I could be more help, but frankly I think the chances of finding schematics are slim. A good tech might be able to poke around and find something obvious but my guess is that's about all you can expect.
