We got SL1200 tunes! Bling-y tunes but tunes nonetheless!First reactions...
1) I think this is the lightest table I have ever owned - by a fair ways. It is positively featherweight against its competition in my living room. What I moved off the rack to give it space is far from the heaviest in my living room, but it was at least 3x the weight.
2) In terms of value for money, a used SL1200 is an entirely competent table for what they go for. One could do worse by spending more money.
3) I can see why people like this table - it's eminently easy to use and set up. There are no worries about pitch per se.
4) It does not get 'delicacy' done quite right. It may be the cart match (I have used three so far, Empire 4000D/II, Empire 1000 ZE/X, Koetsu Rosewood Signature) but I expect it is more that there is resonance which is not tamed.Spinning Oscar Peterson 'We Get Requests' now after some Herbie Hancock before... Got Sarah Vaughn on deck.

Associated Equipment:
Table: Technics SL1200LTD (1996) with gratuitous Technics sticker on the front, using the gel-filled mat from a Sony TTS-8000 but otherwise stock bling.
Cart: Koetsu Rosewood Signature
Speakers: Jadis Eurythmies
Associated Electronics: black-color Japanese solid-state stuff (with good specs) from the early 80s (sworn to secrecy by another AA member - I won't tell until he allows me to - suffice it to say, it is good enough)

and some classical piano (Maurizio Pollini playing the Chopin Preludes, and some other)...and playing them also on the table next to the SL1200.
On the SL1200, I took off the Sony and went for a Technics SP-10Mk2 stock mat. The Sony mat is different. It would appear to work better for classical but it is not clear that it works better for BB King. I am going to have to try that again.
My opinion continues to be that SL1200 with an MC cartridge sounds like it is playing with an MM cart. Nice and sexy, with appropriate dynamics, but not enough delicacy and grace.
The Denon DP100 next to it is clearly a better table. It is like listening to a different record sometimes.

You may want to post a picture of them side by side so people can get a better perspective of what you are comparing the SL1200 with :)
You lucky dawg... that is gorgeous!
Several years ago when I bought my Technics SL-1200, KAB had a photo of that model on their website but it was sold out. :-( I would've gladly paid the premium for the gold & black model.
You might consider doing some modifications to your Technics. Truly a great performer with a few mods.
Just remember to wear your Mr. T chains when you listen!

Take That! Giant-killer believers!
***No records were harmed on a Technics 12xx Series during these listening sessions***

LMAO- The mystery black boxes from the late 70's/ early 80's is the Pioneer Z1 series. Sounds pretty nice for antique Japanese SS gear if you're into SS.
Running the whole chain...
headamp...
preamp...
and monoblocks...
"sounds pretty nice" HA-rummmmph!
for the head amp at least Travis :-)
As long as you like it - that's the thing.
Almost falling out of my seat laughing!
anything else just wouldn't match...
What, my red cabinet doesn't match ;) Star Wars theme my friend! The gold lettering should really make it jump as compared to the dull black hulk of the DP100. You could let my wife paint bunnies on them as she continually threatens me....
You oughta know better than that. Still, it's a pretty sexy arm. I don't know about the "disco special" logo, though. If it works I'd say it's OK. What's the dustcover status? Can't go around blinding passers by with that thing, it ain't legal.
Is that headshell Kosher? Arm rest clamp OK? Speed on? I mean, all that.
If it's good and the cueing works how can it be bad?
Cueing works, arm rest clamp OK, speed spot on, tonearm is blingy. Headshell is an AT headshell - not completely kosher to test the Technics pure stock, but I think y'all should give me a pass....
Gratuitous sticker tells me it is a Technics from across the room in case I have forgotten!
