A few years ago I bought a 4x4 Expedit in "black-brown" at the local Ikea store, and I've been meaning to pick-up another.
This morning I checked online, and "my" store no longer stocks it. "No big deal", I'm thinking. "I'll order it, and have it shipped to the store...."
WRONG! Ikea does not, and will not, drop-ship an order at the store. Yes, they are more than happy to ship it to your home or other address, but I sure as heck don't want to pay the same amount for shipping as I do for the actual item!
So, so much for Ikea!

Many times they know the way to get in something you want. They may or may not be easily accessible and sometimes assistant managers can make this an easier project.
They discontinued my Aegium cases and I couldn't get any help with that situation.

Hi Jim,
That's a shame that your store does not stock the shelf you want. Perhaps you can pick one up in Chicago at Central Fest this year. That's exactly what I did last year because I don't have an Ikea store in my city. It worked out very well for me.
Best regards,
John Elison
I'm in the need for one "now", as I'm in the beginning phases of "staging" the house for listing. My hockey buddy/realtor said the place would sell a lot faster if it didn't have records lying "all over the place" (go figure!), and I hope to have it "sold" long before Centralfest time...
I see you got some snow down your way. Drive safely, my friend!

I've found the Expedit shelves in stock at my local Ikea. Seattle area. However that was some time ago when I checked. I've no idea if any are in stock in that store now.
Personally, I've avoided those Expedit shelves simply because 1) I'm too cheap, and 2) because I've found a stronger rack (cheaper too) that seems to suit my 'barbarian aesthetic taste' somewhat better. You can put these on wheels if you like too. Something the Expedit would not survive.

You've got me curious, Steve. Care to share? I'll need something new once I sell the place.....

Steel racking from NSF. Pictured are a couple of 5 level racks. I use them in combination with 'milk crates' from Staples. The milk crates are not a perfect dimension for the Lp size, a little tall, but work just fine. Apple or orange crates should work as well. Or something custom made. On the upper level I am storing R2R tapes. That is why the narrower gap.
Anyway, The steel NSF rack has no problem supporting this amount of weight and could hold a much greater load if need be. They are popularly used in various industries. You also see them in laboratories supporting whatever needs to be supported there. In the industrial setting you often see these with heavy caster wheels attached to the bottom of each of the four poles.
Prices vary depending on where you find these. I found mine at Walmart for around $35.00 each for the 5 tier models. They also come in chrome. For the listening room I prefer the black color which blends better with what else is in the room.

I've got a 4 tier unit like that loaded with boxes of comic books and stereo magazines (same thing?). It's been there for at least 6 years now with no problems.
I have the 4 x 4 Expedite and I think they could be configured with casters. I have carpet so the addition of casters with this much weight would be silly.
I think I saw these 4 x 4 book shelves set up on castors at my local Scandia furniture outlet. They have the same thing as the Expedit but with nicer veneer at 4-6 times the price.
I like your solution! If the records are already in moving containers they make it easier to rotate your collection if you have limited room in your listening area.

actually, i have 9 of the expedit units (5x5's, 4x4's, 2x4's, et) and have the 2x4's on wheels. ikea sells the wheels for these.
and, with the exception of the first unit i bought, i've gotten all the rest of them off of Craigs list. people selling due to moving, not using them, et al. all i've gotten have looked/smelled/acted, etc, as new.
lots and lots of these units show up daily/weekly here on CL in So Cal, so by all means check out your local CL listings.
I guess I was thinking of the full sized Expedits. 5x5. Basically, once you get one of these loaded down with records, they tend to collapse, unless you modify the unit by putting a back panel on it to stiffen the structure. At least that is the folklore.
It was something I was willing to do but after looking at them up close, I decided to go with something cruder and to my own liking. I could be wrong, however.

According to the website it says it's most likely that the twin cities store has the $59 and $199 ones in black/brown in stock. Perhaps they are just out of the other sizes for the moment, especially since most of the stores do have the 4X4 and others in black/brown in stock.
I started looking at the 2x2 units, and stacking them somehow. But alas, "not in stock". The $59 unit would tower over the space and make it look rather "odd", and I can't afford $199 for something that I'll only use for a few months (I'm selling the house and just need make things look "tidy").
Thanks for looking, though! I really appreciate it.

Bit of a drive from MN I'm afraid...
My Star Trek beam transporter is down again! :)
(I wonder why some stores have them, and some stores don't....)

We have a big Ikea about 45 minutes drive away. Here (Vancouver) they seem to have pretty good stock, but I would be concerned about discontinuing colors or the entire Expedit line.
I'm not sure what Canadian Ikea policy is re drop-ship.
I've just finished assembled a birch 5x5 and two 2x2s. I probably need to cull records rather than buy any more units, as I'm out of floor space, now having a 5x5, two 4x4s, two 2x2s plus a 2x6 unit I built myself out of plywood before I discovered Expedit. That's about 77 cubby-holes worth, and I estimate around nearly two tons of records (3850 lbs at the estimate of 50lbs per linear foot I saw here some while back). I dread the thought of moving when I retire.

Just having recently moved (last month) about the same amount of weight, I can say with 100% certainty that your move will not have the word "fun" associated with it. Unless you hire someone.
Next house, I'm building my own racks.
Jim
I waited 3 months between purchases and found I cound no longer buy the matching piece anywhere. It would be a shame if this happens to the Expedit, for IMO it is the best deal for LP's anywhere. (if you can get to the store). I have the Black 5X5 and they don't even offer that color in store or online anymore, now they make a "Walnut", which I'd prefer.
regards, Pete
Once my place sells this spring (please God, let it sell!), I may be able to give you a really sweet deal on a black 4x4 unit!
And I think it would even fit in my trailer.....
Jim
I may be moving in the spring and I was going to give you my 5x5.
no shit, pete
No way.
Opus 104
While I was on "hold" a recording told me, "This call may be recorded for quality control (or was it training?) purposes". After I hung-up I thought, "I hope they recorded that call!"
And then I figured, "What do I care? I'm done with 'em, and they can do as they please".
Jim
when, for the combined price you could build something very nice!
Once again, I do not understand their business practices. Is it so they can limit how many people are in the store...that makes no sense. If there were more stores, the customers would be "spread out" across the state (or country).
I'd think that a store in every major TOWN...Baltimore, Frederick, Falls Church, Hagerstown...I think in PA there are 4 stores!

...luckily my 'rents still live in Pittsburgh if I ever want anything from IKEA...
I just looked at my e-mail and there's an ad for Ikea! They drive me nuts.

While many of their products are really good, getting to one is a hassle. If you are fortunate by living where they chose to put a store, fine. If you don't a 2 hour drive or more is almost a waste.
I try to go when I'm at Penguin's house, but he lives a good distance from the Ikea, also! I just don't understand why they would want to have so few stores.
That said, the microfiber blankets they sell for a little bit of nothing are W A R M!

Most retailers I know would be happy to drop-ship an item at the customer's closest store. But not these guys.
But this is their policy, and like I told 'em: "Well, good luck with that policy!".
