truly a creative work !!

How the hell does he ever listen to it? Even John Lyden isn't that bad.
That's what my daughter said when she saw this.

Makes "steam cleaning" records much easier.
Someone had to say it.
Vinyl and steam locomotives. LOL and envious at the same time.
Maybe you have an Erector set:
Or a few thousand extra Lego pieces (which, having a 9 year old, I do!!)

Life is analog...digital is just samples thereof
I'm easily impressed. It is an awesome conversation piece and it is nice looking.
...assuming it's coal powered. In any case, it should be on the cover of the next Pink Floyd "Relics" reissue.

Yes indeed!
Its a genuine creation from our steamy past.

He'd love this guy, if for no other reason than this:
And this:
The more I look, the more amazed I am at this guys skills!

Opus 104
A unit with an outboard, uh, "power supply" in order to change this:"The speed is regulated to 33 1/3 (well, more or less)..."
To this:
"The speed is regulated to 33 1/3 (dang near!)"
Gotta love it! Thanks for posting this!
(Edit: This thing is nicely built! Check out the link.)

If you want a brighter sound, just add more fuel. Its a cost effective motor control in the end.
Happy Holidays Jim!

I think it is absolutely brilliant. Did you guys check out the speed regulator? brilliant!
Amazing workmanship, however high sound floor. You will have to turn up the amp.
I can't get over the fact that someone took the time to build such a beautiful Rube Goldberg design with precision, and skill.Indeed a lot of time was put into it.
wow!
it's about the music
you can play before having to add some water to the boiler..;-)
I'm guessing that the tonearm park position does not indicate direction of platter rotation. But rather that the tonearm needs to sweep greater than 90 degrees positive just prior to the needle drop.
Then there is the issue of the amount of time it takes from a cold start to 33-1/3 rpm. Maybe 5 or six minutes for it to build up a full head of steam...;^}
At least the, uh, artist.....has managed to embody the pun of 'steam punk' by using a steam powered record player to play a punk rock Lp. That much is kind of cool. He should just cover it in glass and display it somewhere. Nice workmanship, really.

Probably quieter than some of the DC motors I've used in the past :)
Fascinating, but that's one of the crappiest sounding turntables I've ever heard. It makes 8-tracks sound "audiophile."
I hardly think the guy built this object as an exercise in fidelity...the 'sounds like crap' comments just goes to show how this 'hobby' can make people seem a little out of touch.
I think the guy who built this unit probably has a lot more FUN than some of the people wandering the halls of the asylum.
Sheesh!
Chris
And he has shown tremendous whimsical creativity and serious engineering talent, two characteristics that don't always show up together.
Clearly, the guy who designed and built that turntable is very talented, creative, and no doubt had a lot of fun building it. It's a beautiful piece of work. I hardly see that I or anyone else making critical comments about the atrocious sound quality is "missing the point." I'm certainly impressed with what he's done but I'd be even more impressed if it held speed accurately. From what I hear, the pitch is deviating in the plus/minus 20% range.
I also like to build stuff. Here's a snapshot of my DIY turntable (platter & drive cannibilized from a direct drive Marantz) with oak unipivot tonearm. I appreciate creating unique 'art turntables' as much as anyone, but I also value performance.
It is clear that you are having FUN with audio, and I am impressed (and somewhat envious) with you DIY efforts. Did you really think that when you clicked on a link for 'steam powered turntable' that you would find something approaching fidelity or high performance?
Keep having fun!
Chris
Forget about only hearing hiss on the recording, ...
