Just ripped my first LP, EC's "Slowhand" at 24 bit, 96kHz. Sounds pretty darned good. Listening via my Klipsch PC speakers and Grado cans. Very easy to set up. Saved as lossless .WAV file. LP takes up 1.23 GB of HD space on my little 120GB notebook USB drive. The Creative box is well worth the $55 price, IMHO.
Next up, George Benson's "Breezin'"

But thanks for the Slowhand Idea, may have to play that tonight, or maybe 461 Ocean BLVD.

I have lossless (Flac) rips that are much smaller. Whole albums usually take up about 250-300 megs. Double albums 500-600 megs. I suspect you are ripping to wav and not Flac. But even at wav, your file size seems big.

That could be it. You might try ripping to Flac. It is supposed to be the same as a direct copy but with a compression scheme that allows for a smaller file size. My son (the computer geek) assures me that it is the same as an original copy. It may be worth a try.

The size is about what I expected for 24/96 recording.

and play it back on the fly with Winamp (which has a FLAC plug-in).

I think Audacity exports to flac now

Flac is freeware and will do the conversion from wav. Just go to downloads at the top of the page

I did not need the version I purchased because my EMU1212 card came with the same software. Then you can burn to a DVD and keep your drive space for your favoite cuts so you can make compilation DVD-A's.
Works sweet.
I appreciate the offer, Tubes. I really have no desire to burn discs, as I'm doing this primarily because down the road a ways, I may face moving to some form of assisted living facility and doubt I could haul my analog gear, big Maggies, etc., along. I might get a big honking USB external drive to store the LPs. Or maybe just another 120-160GB notebook USB drive.
I figure I can get 75 or so LPs on my existing external drive with no problems.
Listening to the Benson LP now. Nice.
Henry
You should anticipate a failure of your drive, so either back up to
a second external drive, or to DVDs.

Back everything up, and keep a copy off site.
