You really need to specify more information since there are turntables that cost more than cars. In fact, have a peek around www.needledoctor.com and look at the turntables section to get an idea of what's being made today. There are also many good used tables out there. Also, will this be plugging into an existing system or are you starting from scratch?
I already asked him all that stuff.
I know, but I wasn't sure he'd find it. Plus, don't you think sending him on an educational trip to Needle Doctor was a nice touch? :)-Bry
Yes, it was. We think he's a troll, though. So, why not have some fun? We started out on a serious note, and he never responded.
Ah... I'm always suspicious, but I also hate to dump on some n00b with a serious inquiry. Oh well. Hey, I found a little record shop that has tons (I mean tons) of fairly common stuff for $1. I've been filling out the collection and trying to think of other bands I might want to include. It's nice when you're looking for, say, Breakfast in America and there's 6 copies to choose from. :)
I wish I could be so lucky. There are no record stores around here, good, or bad.
Well, take a vacation to Florida. Hurricane season is over, and we've got beaches, Disney... it helps if you speak a little spanish, but heck, the place is hoppin!
Any discussion of the Creme de la Creme of turntables is incomplete without the inclusion of the fabled Fisher Price Music Box !Regards FredJ
I have one in my garage that the kids now well in their 30's used. i remember it sounded remarkable for it's plastic quality. especially on Michael jackson records!
That qualifies it at least as "good", right?

Bill- The older Vintage Fisher Price Music Boxes sound even better
I'm told they age like a fine Cognac or Brandy, despite the fact that the Bunnies on the plinth very sadly will tend to fade :-(
...and it's cheap at twice the price...The Rockport System III Sirius at a mere $73,000!
....the Walker Audio Proscenium Gold Signature at $29,000!!
"If I were a rich man...."
The platter is precision and wieghs a mere 60Kg, sitting on a 100Kg granite plinth...
J.C. Verdier Platine Magnum
AFAIK this is the only TT in the world using a hydrostatic bearing. Theoretically a lovely and elegant solution but the practical implementation is a bear with a very sore head.
And do they make a direct drive version?
Are they implying that their TT mimicks the legendary WE 300B sound? If so...I want one!!
God I need to get my SE DHT amp fixed and pull my WE 300B's out of hibernation.....oh the days!
The Wester Electric 300B was placed in the photos as an aid for judging scale... they did mention that it was WE...eso
laughing. Hey what can I say, the fellow wanted the best Turntable, I mean record player. The Rockport should be on the top 10 at least. No???
Reefer_Kay on the phone: Mr. Yorke, I don't like the crap you usually make. Could you build one without compromise for me with no ceiling for a budget?Simon Yorke: Yes, but I will require a deposit.
Reefer_Kay: Would 100 British Pounds Sterling get you started?
Simon Yorke: When would you expect to receive the finished product, and would you like for me to come over and set it up for you? Are you available next week?
Reefer_Kay: Sure. That would be nice. By the way, do you have any friends who make custom amps?
Simon Yorke: Of course I do!
Reefer_Kay: Great! I'll wire the funds over immediately.
"Would 100 British Pounds Sterling get you started?"You're being redundant. Pounds Sterling are British, as opposed to an Irish Punt.

I said "pure bliss" in the Manilow post. Before you start, I know that bliss is pure by its very nature. ;)

...I only wrote that to be funny...so I guess I've done my job!

These days when you talk about record players, you are talking about turntables because we have gotten fancy with all the terminology. Now the questions start.
What results do you expect? How much money do you want to spend, including the needle (called a cartridge now)? Do you want a brand new turntable, or an older one that sounds great? Are you handy with tools? Are your records all scratched up, or are you very picky with them? Do you want a fancy tonearm? How fancy? What components does the rest of your stereo consist of? List the brands and models. What continent are you on? I know that sounds strange, but availability and power requirements vary by the country. If you can weather the interrogation, we can recommend plenty of choices. Then, we will all argue about those recommendations for a few days. In the end, however, you will no doubt have audio Nirvana!
Looks like you covered the bases very well. I started to reply, but I have a tendency to get wordy and would have ended up with a novel and parts of it probably could have been considered science fiction. Hopefully they will answer and stick around long enough to get some good suggestions.
I didn't ask what kind of music the thread originator likes, but I can't think of everything, can I? By the way, I thought my post was a novel. Exactly how long would have your response been? ;)
I sometimes have this inate ability to write really long messages that really are not relevent to questions that are sometimes asked, but usually this only happens on weekends and days that end in "y". Which happens to be the 25th letter of the alphabet, which is one of the last letters we learn when entering school, unless we are fortunate enough to be homeschooled, which I wasn't, so maybe that really has little to do with what I was talking about. What was the question?
I'm sorry, I was sitting here watching my lovely Katrina play the Bösendorfer across the room. I suppose I've had far too much Madame Biz LeRoy tonight. My attention span seems to have been affected.Reality check -
Who let that damned dog in the house, and why is he on the kitchen table? Somebody get him out of here this very minute! What the Hell is wrong with you people?
Sorry, I lost it for a minute, but I'm back now. You were saying?
a while ago, and she was saying that I had been grumpy all day and she wanted me to say something nice to her. I thought about it for a minute and told her "for a fat gal you sure don't sweat very much." Thinking I had really impressed her I leaned over to get a kiss and she bloodied my nose. We did have a good round of rodeo sex that other night though. We were making love and I told her she wasn't nearly as good in bed as her sister. I tried to hold on for 8 seconds, but I only made it for a count of 6.7 seconds. I had always heard that when ya get thrown off ya gotta jump right back into the saddle, but I will be damned, she weren't in the mood no more. Married for 26 years to that woman and I still can't figure her out.

and the Catholic asked for a virgin
Bravo ! You're in rare form this evening ! I now have a side ache !

He got that name for some reason.
Yeah, No Doubt. Which reminds me, do you like No Doubt's female singer? What is her name? It's on the tip of my tongue.
I don't know. You better hope Helga isn't farting tonight.
last week and we had a plate of Baklava by the side of the bed. As we were making love, she said, "pass the baklava" and then farted real big. She then exclaimed, "nevermind, I already did." God I love that woman.
when I first met her, she was a real beauty. Her private area was so cute with just a whisp of hair. After 26 years it looks more like a cow turd with a wagon rut going thru it. Old age sucks. Oh, to be young again.
determine a budget, tell us what music and how loud, amp you are to use, etc. before any simple answer can be given.
