I picked up an unusual item today and don't know anything about it. It is a ten disc set (LP's), (boxed) Deutsche Grammophon Beethoven Edition of String Quartets - String Quintet dated 1970. All the Disc are in mint condition and the box in very good condition. the sleeves are all marked "sample not for sale". Anyone know anything about these sets. value?
thanks..
Follow Ups:
I found one from the same set (number 5) of the trios with at Italian Trio. This was recently re-released on CD to very high praises, possibly beating out the Flouristan Trio version on Hyperion that is also excellent (albeit on CD). My copy of the DG set is also in excellent condition. I think that these were part of a series that were sold to a record club.
I have 2 boxed sets originally released in the early 1960'S - 7 discs in total. An absolute treasure. There was probably another boxed set I do not have = 10 in total. What is it you want to know?
Peace at AA
John
I am not familiar with the particular set that is the subject of your posting, but in 1970 DGG issued a massive multi-set edition of all of Beethoven's music in honor of the centenary of his birth. Your set could be part of that. I had some of those at one time, and they had a special white-ish glossy paper cover with gold trim over a reddish box. Quality of performance and vinyl was excellent. At that time I don't believe MHS had any access to that material, using mostly material from ERATO.
That's it. Just as you described. They box has a "4" on the spline, so i assume there are several different sets as part of this collection. Do you know how many? Now I'll be on a quest to find the rest to complete this fine collection. These really are fine recordings. I listened to several last night and I don't think these had ever been played before. No noise at all. I did'nt clean them, just used a carbon fiber brush and played them. Great stuff.
Thanks for the info.
There are two versions of DG's Beethoven Edition: one with navy blue bindings and one with red bindings. The navy blue issues are the most common as they were distributed by Time-Life here in the United States. I think there are 17 volumes in the set, which also came with a very nice coffee table book. Generally, you can find individual volumes listed on eBay and these don't usually command a premium price.
Apparently these blue sets "Beethoven Bicentennial Collection" are cheap as dirt. The volunteers at the big Hartford sale of donated stuff say these usually just get tossed out. I picked up nine volumes there last weekend, for $8. Haven't listened to these yet; they're pressed in the U.S., not Germany.I expect the pressings won't be great, but some of the performances are renowned. (unfortunately all the orchestral stuff is Karajan, no Kleiber... imo that's a disservice to Ludwig and to the DG catalog)
Noam
I have a similar set of Beethoven's Nine Symphonies on DG. It was a promotion for joining a record club. I think it was called Musical Heritage Society.
I have 2 Limited Edition box sets of Shubert and Hayden symphonies (75 year anniversary editions) - issued 1973. My estimate: Same kind of deal as the Not for Sale DG sets. Outstanding music by a great recording co., probably not terribly valuable, relatively speaking; I'd put value of 20-30 bucks on the Beethoven set, if you were to go to used record store and try to buy same. My guess.
