My local newspaper has a full page ad for the Shinola "Runwell" turntable today. Anybody have experience with this? What can you tell us about it?

Love the story behind it. Love that the makers encourage hacking of the preamp. Love the way it looks and the build quality! For $2500 you're getting a VPI Classic (essentially) with preamp and cart. Not a bad deal.
I couldn't help myself.
.
Schitt preamp.
Schitt and Shinola.
All kidding aside, that's a pretty good phono pre. Is it the best for your Shinola? That's hard to say. I would think the only person that can answer that is someone who owns the turntable AND the same cart you have.
The phono preamp providing MM RIAA is built into the Shinola turntable along with a Ortofon Blue cartridge. The whole preamp module slides easily in and out of the turntable base allowing for future variants and easier servicing. Mr. Fremer has a great Youtube video up with a factory tour of Shinola. For the price of $2500, it looks like a pretty nice turntable anyone would be proud to own. I like that VPI was involved in consulting and parts. I think it shows that turntable pie is large and growing and there is more than enough demand to support many maunfacturers.

They were made for each other....
VOI builds turntables that are for purpose built high quality music reproduction, looks be damned. The Shinola would appeal to people that want a good sounding traditional turntable. My opinion of course...
I haven't heard one myself, but I gather it's basically a VPI Scout with better cosmetics.
Happy listening,

I wonder why VPI would be involved. It seems like the Shinola would be taking business away from VPI so why would they be promoting another turntable business? Why not simply expand their own company to meet the additional demand if it really exists?
Strange!
John, Matt responded to a similar question on another post. He said with a realignment of VPI models the Shinola would fall outside theirs. And they have been happy to work with Shinola staff in developing it. In addition to furnishing the tonearms they machine a couple other pieces in NJ and send them on to Detroit for assembly.

I'd bet that the typical "Shinola" customer isn't an audiophile, but likes nice things.
VPI will be getting access to sales they normally wouldn't have - and making the turntable for Shinola, they make a little profit, and Shinola makes some, too.
One thing for sure, the turntable won't be junk.

They are built for the non-audiophile crowd. They are sold in department stores such as Neimann Marcus.
To get to a market that would not normally think of VPI or other high-end turntable manufacturers.

And possibly get a VPI designed (word does get around) turntable into the hands of the mass-marketers who can discount the product without running afoul of VPI's agreements with its retail dealers?
Cheers,
SB
Which should be obvious by now.

...knowing or not knowing Schiit vs Shinola. It's actually legitimate to say that "I don't know Schiit from Shinola". And it would be true in my case. The world has a way of turning full circle over time. So much fun.
