Greetings,
I've recently purchased a Pioneer PL-41A turntable, and when I received it, the platter mat seemed hard. I used Vinylex on it, no change. Today, I happened to see a video on Youtube of a person using my model TT, and when he removed the platter mat, it was soft and pliable. There isn't anything a person can do to soften a platter mat, is there, or is there some secret recipe?
Thanks

I too had a stiff, brittle mat. I chalked it up to being 40 years old. I have a friend with a vertical mill and he just milled the little flange off so I can use any mat I want. Also, your thrust pad is probably cracked and disintegrating so the spindle is riding on bare metal. Get the Delrin PL-41 thrust pad on ebay. Google "Let's Mod A Pioneer PL-41" and there is some great info. Mostly it's about tonearm spacing and mounting but there's good info about opening up the bearing, polishing the spindle, and replacing the thrust pad. I'm sorry I wasn't able to help with the brittle mat issue. Good luck. Have fun.

Yea, the only thing I can think of that could have caused it is maybe it was stored in the attic above the garage and was exposed to heat (it was from Huntington Beach) every year for 30-40 years. I've just ordered a cork and rubber mat, and I'll just cut the center out using the original mat as a pattern. Mine has already had the thrust plate replaced, and I'm sending it to Stereorehab in a month or two, who will polish the spindle and tune it up generally.

I would check out Herbie's Way Excellent II Mat first. I think he has one that will work on your table without milling. He has different diameters and thicknesses. Just measure the diameter an thickness of your mat and match it up.

Greetings,
Thanks a lot for the info, I had no idea they sold them with a 'donut hole' in the center; I'll probably pick one up in the near future.
