What the hell, right? I only have one 45 RPM album (Lyn Stanley - Potions) and it needed some company so when I switch over my belted TT to 45, I can play more than one album before switching back.
I picked up all three at 15% off from Acoustic Sounds. All are records that I have wanted for quite a while, but never could justify the prices. I was actually surprised that the coupon code worked, because it usually doesn't on the records I normally buy.
Looking forward to listening to these:
Nat King Cole - The Very Thought of You
Nat King Cole - After Midnight
Stan Getz & Joao Gilberto - Getz and Gilberto
Follow Ups:
One caveat about 45s. They can be great but you might get tired of getting up every few minutes to change sides. My set-up has my turntable next to my recliner so I can just reach over without getting up. Still, playing lots of 45s can become tiresome, not to add quite expensive. My suggestion- listen to the music first on Spotify or youtube to see if you like it first and then buy only the ones you love in 45.
That's always been my concern, but I figure with maybe only 8-12 45's in the collection, it would be short stints of a few days with the up and down routine. Then, back to the 33's.
if you look at her records from a quality of recording aspect, they are great.
great musicians, excellent recordings on vinyl and SACD, fantastic recording engineer (Al Schmidt!) BUT the performances leave a LOT to be desired. she just doesn't have the drive to propel the music. there are some good moments and rather than jazz, i think she should concentrate on the showtune crowd as in the amanda mc broom records on sheffield.
so it could be ME, i cannot stand amanda nor listening to that kind of music much. for jazz you should try patricia barber and anne bisson. we cold insert diana krall but her recordings have been played to death and many of us can't stand to hear her much more.
that doesn't include me because i have made it a point to NOT play her discs all the time. girl in the other room is about her best work, tempation being the hot number.
i have lyn's first two LPs , the first bought right from her personally and signed, the other i won in our raffle at one of our LA/OCAS meetings, it is also signed. the second better than the first but not enough to compel me to buy the third. i will admit that i have not heard the potions and cannot rule it out as an entertainment value in jazz.

good call on those singers.
what about holly cole ?
oyes, holly cole is great too and she has LPs available. melody gardot is one i haven't mentioned and i think she is in the wonderful category too. and all her releases are on vinyl too.

I agree about Lyn Stanley's work. I bought Potions to help her Kickstarter effort and I enjoy the production quality and a few of the songs performance wise, but, as you, don't find her compelling enough to buy a second or third.
I'll check out Anne Bisson, but I cannot get in to Patricia Barber at all. The only Diana Krall I currently have on LP is "Live in Paris" which I like a lot and just played again last night.
These other fine artists mentioned have sponsors. Lyn is footing the entire bill for her productions! She has had many challenges that she has overcome, the drive that you mention is within her. For pure romance she is hard to beat, but continues to expand to other songs and genres...
Good thing to have her music for when romance is a main priority :)
live in paris is quite special to me. as i was attracted to her i also felt that she was too perfectly polished in the early albums i had gotten good but in a way; too perfect. jeff hamilton and john clayton (a wonderful person in my estimation) had overproduced the albums to flawless perfection.
that's what bothered me and i wanted to see a more human source of the music. quite surprisingly, it happened on its own, i saw her perform on the pbs series 'sessions at west 54th'. there she was. ALIVE and showing it with ever so slight imperfections (tousled hair, little bits of timing that wasn't metronomic. a HUMAN performing in a most enticing way she was.
live in paris was later released and again, a live person was performing and captivated me. i gave out xmas presents of that dvd that year and i still marvel over it. that Al Schmidt engineered it was a feather in that cap, the sound and musical presentation is second to none.
notice that lyn stanley ALSO employed the master, Al Schmidt and that plus the choice of great accompanying musicians, did make the instrumental part of her performances shine brilliantly.
i am hoping that lyn can develop into the artist she aspires to be.

and can deal with getting up every 8 min. or so, try Music Matters Blue Note 45s.
I thought I was done with 45s ( a royal PITA ) but a friend of my showed up with bunch of his Music Matters 45 releases and I decided to order some. ( before this I only had one MM45: Kenny Drew's Undercurent which I still prefer my MM33 release on this particular title) I've been picking up a few of my favourites. These tend to sound a bit better than AP's Blue Note of Prestige releases or even Classic Record's 45s because I suspect these guys are bit more selective in terms of master tape condition. Beautifully packaged with high resolution rare Francis Wolf's photos inside gatefold jacket.
Thanks! I have a lot of those already on the AP Blue Note and Prestige series reissues and since I'm not one to own dual copies of a record, maybe I'll fill in a few of the ones I don't own with the MM 45's.
Indeed, AP has a few Mobley Blue Note ( and Prestige label issues ) but those MM 45s I've posted are not the dupes. I hate to own duplicates except the album I love like this one. :P
MM33 hands down sounds the best surpassing that of AP45 reissue. ( From what I understand, they found a better master tape than any of the reissues I own )
Anyways, MM is finally calling it a quit. Here is their remaining 45 catalogue.
The pricing on some of the titles have already gone up.
I am planning to pick up a few more Horace Silver titles next year.

Thanks for the clarification. The MM 45 catalogue does duplicate about a dozen or so of the AP 33 reissues that I have, but that still leaves a lot more that I don't. I'll have to comb thru that list and see if I can find a half dozen or so to put on my want list.
Looks like it won't be long before my 45 collection grows even more. Thanks for all the suggestions and confirmations on the quality of these reissues.Any other jazz "gotta haves" in AP's 45 reissues? Gotta put a budget together.

Acoustic Sounds had their AP stuff for $25 on Black Friday. Picked up a bunch of Prestige Mono's
The $50 AP ones were half price? If so, I missed a great deal.
As to the Prestige Monos, I already have a lot of those and they are very good.
I meant to write 25% off of their house brand, anything pressed or done by Analogue Producions.
Still a great deal and better than the one I just succumbed to. I'll have to time new purchases better especially on these $50-70 albums.
The most was 25% off AP releases.
The Getz & Gilberto album is stunningly good IMO. Money very well spent on all three.

Those 45s are the closest a person can get to the sound of the master tape.
they are not cheap, but they are good.
happy listening.
2nd and 3rd copies are warranted!
My fave is "Love is the thing"
Lyn Stanley's Portions is good too.
I'll have to pick up the Interlude album soon.
I eyed Analogue Productions 5LP 45RPM Nat King Cole Story box set for a while after it was released. Then in December of 2012, before vinyl got seriously crazy, I came across it on ebay. Starting bid $29.99, description said it was mint. I ended up being the only bidder. After shipping, just over $36. It sounds fantastic! That was a good Christmas.
...and it sounds fab!
Must take it out and spin it today.
"Love is the Thing" was my initial choice over "The Very Thought of You", but it was backordered so I went with "Thought". I'll pick up "Love" when it's back in stock along with the previously recommended Getz/Byrd album.
Not sure about the "second and third copies" though. LOL
They're all great. If you like the Getz disc, consider the 45 with Getz and Byrd. One of my favorites with superb sound.
Jazz Samba...it's absolutely fabulous
Thanks for the encouragement. I'll put the Getz/Byrd on my list for the next order.
I say, congratulations.
It's a good feeling.

Thanks, it is.
