Better than Keith Moon, Ginger Baker, John Bonham and Jeff Porcaro? I think not.
Opus 33 1/3
I have given this a lot of thought and gone back and listened to a lot of music and have to say that for me the very best of the best drummers in rock is actually Michael Shrieve. Not trying to take anything away from any of the others mentioned, although personally, for me, Ginger Baker would not be on my short list.
Good time, since Bearette is away on biznis...Carmine Appice is definitely in the Hall O' Fame, with some less well-known guys like Bill Ward (Sabbath). Appice is on a level with Baker IMHO but neither of those cats are fit to touch Pretty Purdie's throne! Beck-Bogart-Appice really rocks but it is a technical exercise for the musical listener more than for toe-tappin', eh?
Just one Bear's deep heartfelt opinion but there's really no drummers since Bonzo passed. Maybe SiPhi (Simon Philips) approaches his level of emotion, sophistication and madness, all while perfectly keeping time to the nanosecond.
I had to google Jeff Porcaro... sorry dude. Porcaro's sure a big unsung studio cat, like Jeff Berlin or Bunny Brunel in my little 4-string world. Toto? I always thought they were musically excellent and now I gotta go find some vinyl from them. Good thing I have a huge credit at my local EllPeeHut.
You got recommendations?

when Porcaro died way before his time. If you want a good representation of Toto, get the ST debut and the classic Toto IV.
Opus 33 1/3
Cool recc's-- I think I'd like a copy of the Dune soundtrack but it's big bucks nowadays I see. Life is weird.
Methinks we should add Neil Peart to your list too.
...but he doesn't have that spark.
He sounds like a machine that Alex Lifeson and Geddy Lee built in their basement. A very good machine, but a machine nonetheless.
