I'm on my second disc of the recent Nina Simone "Little Girl Blue" reissue. With the first disc I bought I heard significant distortion or break-up of the sound on the loudest musical passages for both sides of the record. I returned that disc for a new one. When I played the first side of the new record, it sounded great and I thought "Awesome--problem solved". Wrong. When I played the second side I heard the same distortion on loud passages--especially on Plain Gold Ring.
Is this a pressing defect? The fact that side 1 was much better on the second disc leads me to believe so. If it is a defect does it have a name? Most of the record sounds great; its just when the playing gets more intense that things go awry. Also, could there be something wrong with my table/cartridge that is making things worse? I turned up the VTF a bit and it seemed to get better but didn't go away. I'm mainly using a Technics SP10mk2 with 12" Jelco arm and Denon DLS1 cart and I haven't noticed this issue on any other recordings yet.
Any advice would be appreciated.

I have the same problem. I thought it was my cartridge, but I checked everything and it was set correctly and I did not find the problem on other albums with loud Piano passages. My friend said that it was in the tapes. I would love to hear from Acoustic Sounds on that point.
Interesting. Thanks for the info. I just reread Fremer's review of this pressing and I'm thinking he would've mentioned it if it was in the tapes and he heard the same things we are. It's not exactly subtle.
Confusing. Improvement with second disk would indicate a pressing problem, while improvement from increased VTF would imply tracking problem.I have a 2001 Italian import on Get Back that sounds good. Pretty dense piano at those three spots. I digitized mine back in May,so let me know if you want to see what mine sounds like.
Do you have another cartridge to try? I would also try increasing the VTF to up to 10% higher than Denon's recommendation. How are you measuring your VTF? I try to make sure the measurement is taken at the same height the needle will be when playing a record.

Thanks for the advice. I do happen to have a second table right now. It's a VPI Classic 1 that I think will be my main table in the future. I played the 1st disc I bought on the VPI as well and heard the same breakup during the intense passages. The VPI has a Zu-103 on it. If it's at least partially a tracking problem it doesn't seem like I should expect the conical 103 stylus to perform better.
I haven't been able to listen to your file yet but I'll download an FLAC player this weekend and listen to it. I'll also play around with VTF some more and try the 2nd disc on the VPI.
Are there passages in properly pressed records that are so intense that you need a super expensive system to track them well?
Windows media player will play it after you download it. Let me know after you download it, I'm going to remove the link.
I don't think you need an expensive system to avoid mistracking. Although I've had problems in the past with sibilance on Louis Armstrong's close-miked voice, crackling in Joe Cocker's voice, and muted trumpet on Clark Terry's Seranade to a Bus Seat. I understand some Mercury classical recordings gave a lot of people trouble.
Your gear is plenty good enough, but if the problem is on the tape, not even the most expensive equipment in the world will play it back right.
I was able to finally play your file. Thanks a lot for providing it! I moved it to a thumb drive and hooked it up to the Oppo. It sounds really nice. What did you use to record it? I don't hear the break up during the loud passages that I hear on my LP.
I guess I'm sending another one back. QRP seems to be having more issues with pressing quality these days--at least based on my small sample size.
(Sorry for posting this twice, but I replied to myself on the first one. Doh!)
I'm glad you were able to play it, and that you enjoyed the recording.
I have a VPI Prime with Soundsmith Zephyr MKii cartridge. I use a Rogue Ares phono preamp into a Parasound Halo P5 preamp. From there I use the Rec Out rca's into a behringer UCA-202, which has a usb output that I plug into my computer. I use VinylStudio software, recording at 16 bits, 48khz with the flac format. The Vinyl Studio software works well for me, and I think is reasonably price. I ony had to add the Behringer and VinylStudio to obtain recording ability, with a $60 total investment. I've since added a NAS which is home for my music. I stream the music from my NAS using Sonos Connect.
I've got about 250 GB of music recorded, with about 9000 songs. I have about 3,000 more albums yet to record. A good winter project!

3000 albums to record sounds like quite the winter project. How many can you do in a day?
By the way, I got a new copy of Little Girl Blue that sounds great so I believe it was a pressing defect at the end of the day. Elusive Disc was very helpful all through the process.
I downloaded a 16.5MB FLAC file but my WMP won't play it. My player could be a bit down rev though. If that's the correct file size go ahead and delete it. I'll work on getting a better player tomorrow. I think I'll post on Analog Planet and see if I get any response. To me, the problem is too gross for it to be on the tapes and folks have just let it slide, but I have been wrong before. :)
