a few general questions....I think the ball used on these bearings is smaller than the shaft, but i have no positive knowledge of that.
So if you know...which configuration is used?
the one on the left or the one on the right....or asking it differently, is the ball fastened to the end of shaft or the thrust pad is fastened to the shaft?
The reason behind these questions is because i need to assemble a motor that Jim Howard could not finish for me. And as luck have it there are not to many people that can answer questions....

It is what it be. Technically it makes no difference. I am trying to find out what Jim's thinking was, I found other clues that says ball on shat.dee

Jim liked to post pictures. Here are pictures of an original Technics bearing with the thrust plate attached like your picture on the left.
Here is another one of Jim's posts with pictures .
Here is another post that shows a configuration similar to your picture on the right .
Some pics of SL-1200 bearing assemblies .
Pictures of a new stock thrust pad !
Good luck,

That was super helpful

However, the interchange between Mark Kelly and Tubes still leaves some doubt in my mind. I wish it didn't.
That my Denon DP-62L bearing job is the one on the left.I know it because I spoke to Jim about the problem he had with replacing the thrust pad at the bottom of the motor. He sent me photos when he was doing my bearing, showing me how he went about replacing the thrust pad.
It required machining the bottom of the motor open so the new thrust pad could be properly mounted. IIRC that was necessary due to the new thrust pad's increased height (or something like that).
He also had to machine the end of the spindle so the ball could ride there properly. My original main bearing was worn with the end of the spindle out of shape, the thrust pad had a dimple worn into its surface and the walls of the bearing needed machining.
The symptom with my main bearing was a thumping sound. This was caused by the combination of the dimple in the thrust pad plus the worn end of the spindle. The ball would ride up and down slightly due to the uneven wear and cause the spindle to rise and fall slightly.
When the spindle fell back into place it made the thump sound. This rise and fall also contributed to the wear on the bearing walls.

.
Because everything is in limbo. Jim made a few decisions and he cut the end of the shaft shorter to account for a pad, then he was going to adjust it to make the motor sit at the right hight, but he failed to take measurements before he started, so i sent him an another motor to take measurements off..Then he got sick and could not work on it....you have the rest of the story...
..so the length of the motor shaft has to be adjusted to take into consideration the ball, the thrust pad and the final desired heigh. Because there are no notes or indications which way he was going to go, pad on top or pad on bottom....you see my dilemma? I can make it whatever i feel like making it as long as the end result is the correct height, and since i cannot just call him up anymore....Hey Jim just which way you were thinking this will go...I am thinking that if i base it on his other designs then it will be better. My ouija board is broken.
