My bought new thorens tt had developed a Verrrrrry slow arm drop action 15 / 20 seconds range. This slooowness developed over ~3 decades. A few years back I oiled the mechanisim... lightly.
No disassembly at all
Arm drop became as fast as turning the Knob.. Too fast imo but I lived with it.
Finally, today I decided to revisit (fix) it.
Disassmbled the gizmo entirely. Seems its a wee cable (thin stranded cable in a wound wire sleeve) activated Rube Goldberg style contraption, while the arm lift itself is a Simple 3mm shaft in a bore. No More, No less.
No silicone or other fluid damping chamber, no orings.. Nada.. just a metal rod with a hole drilled thru and a wee shaft that slides up and down in said hole.
Soooo.. I can only assume, as I did when I Lubed the mechanism.. years ago, that the congealed oil in the rod/hole was the erm.. 'damping' action/mechanism. Impressive.
Am I wrong in this?
I've been over it with a magnifying glass and can see no other possibility.
I would like it to have 'some' damping rather than having the needle Bounce on the record .
Any ideas? help even?
Thanks

Vinyl Engine reply was that A thick Silicone grease needs to be applied.. this is THE lift damping in a Thorens.
Now I need to find find such goop.
It is not unusual for the Thorens cue bar to slow way down after 40 years or so, when the damping lube breaks down and gets thicker and stickier. But if you disassemble and clean it you need to replace that lube.
I've found that a couple of applications of PJ-1 motor cycle chain lube will do the trick as well. It dries into a sticky, waxy film. About 2 -3 applications of that stuff is about right.

Thanks.. actually I had thought of that But I now use Maxima Wax as the Foamy stuff made a mess on chains
Found some automotive Silicone Dielectric grease in my tool box.
Suitably stiff and tenacious.
Now the drop is in the ~ 4 second range and likely to increase with time.
Also found this 'real stuff' Cheapish too.

I think you're looking for 1/2 to 1 second drop times. The guys in at VE/Thorens forum might have the right product ID in their archives somewhere.
