As of April 15th I found myself in a big-time money jam (a divorce can do that) and had to sell off a bunch of stuff I'd hoped to hang onto. But, you gotta' do what you gotta' do, which included the downgrade of my vinyl system as the other stuff I sold didn't get me out of the hole. I sold my DL-S1, have a buyer (and a back up buyer) for my SP-15 and might have to list my amp and preamp ...which is why I sold the DL-S1 ...I wanted a cartridge that was compatible with more phono sections.
I'm the impatient type, so got to researching a replacement table on the cheap. I knew what cartridge I wanted ...a Denon DL-160, which I have owned before and really liked. Only problem is they have become scarce as hen's teeth. As for the table, according to past posts by Curious and cactuscowboy the Kenwood KD-3070 was a very good budget table. I've never had one before and the idea of trying something new was appealing. I trust both these fellows opinions ...so the hunt was on.
Well, as luck would have it I found the DL-160 first ...NOS (!!!), in Germany ...for $200 ...with shipping !! Things were looking up ...this was an encouraging start.
Then I found what looked like a very well preserved KD-3070 on FleaBay with an opening bid of $125, which seemed fair enough. But, what would it sell for? Turns out $125 did the trick. Better yet, the seller followed my packing instructions to the letter, only charged $20 for shipping and the table arrived looking even better than I had expected ...there is not a scratch on it.
The build quality is everything I was lead to believe and as for the sound ...I am impressed and thank Curious and cactuscowboy for what seems to have been a solid recommendation. Thank you, gentlemen.
Down, but not out ...
Dean.

"the seller followed my packing instructions to the letter"
What were your packing instructions?
The seller had never shipped a turntable before and was grateful for the advice. The perfect seller !
1. Remove headshell and wrap separately.
2. Remove tonearm counterweight (it screws off) and wrap separately.
3. Remove tiny weight from anti-skate and wrap separately (or just make sure it is securely in place).
4. Secure the tonearm to the tone arm rest with a twist tie so it stays firmly in place.
5. Remove platter (it lifts off), wrap separately and pack underneath the turntable in bottom of the shipping box.
6. Remove the hinges from the dustcover, wrap and pack separately.
7. Leave the dustcover in place and tightly wrap the entire table and dustcover in Saran Wrap.
8. Wrap the table in several layers of big bubble wrap, enough layers so that it fits tight in the box, which should be at least 4" larger than the table on all sides.
9. Put that box in a slightly larger box and put as much bubble wrap in between as necessary to make things tight.
10. Please do not use packing peanuts. If there is any extra space to fill use cardboard.
11. All of this may make the package heavier and if it does I will gladly pay extra.
I discussed all of this with the seller prior to bidding and she was grateful for my advice as she wanted a smooth transaction as much as I did.
I've said it before and I'll say it again ...don't base your buying decision on the product, buy the seller.

Unfortunately, I've witnessed a few turntables (and other components) damaged because of poor packing. I ask sellers if they still have the original boxes. If they don't, packing can become an issue.
Glad you didn't divorce vinyl.

Never.
Call me crazy ...but I've got tapes of my records that I think sound better than the cee dees.

Good to read you' re spinning your discs again. I have experienced many times in 15 years of vinyl madness that it's the record that matters most. A really good record can sound damn good using modest equipment. Read my post about the Pl-12D i saved from the dumpster!

...my favorite turntable of all time. Dollar-for-dollar I don't think a better table has ever been made. I bought my first one in 1977 for $99 !!
Since then I've bought at least a dozen more.
I've got my eye open for another, for my office system.
Here's one I fixed up for a friend. The base looked hideous, so I covered it with black vinyl. Total cost ...thirty bucks.

Things are actually quite good for me. Being single agrees with me and I'm enjoying myself.
Thanks again.

Nothing like marriage to convince one that being single is a pretty good way to go. Glad you're back! Welcome forward!
More time to do the things you enjoy.

Hope I'm not being too personal.
Not too personal at all.
I've been through downgrades like this many times. Honestly, they can be as fun as upgrades. I enjoy the hunt and when a purchase exceeds my expectations ...well, that's always a good thing.
Gotta' keep a positive outlook.

Good for you knowing what you wanted and having GREAT timing!
Wish I could have bought the SP-15, dammit!
Good on ya! ENJOY!

I hadn't spun any records in a long time. Funny how a new table, even a lesser table than what I am accustomed too, sucked me right back in.

Never heard this arm. How does it compare to e.g. SL1200 or a Linn Basik?
Good luck. Don't get the itch too soon. My PL12D plays great music for just lazing around through a Bugle2. Shure 91ED plus SAS.
The customer is then charged what he is likely to stand. ...
...since I only know the sound of this table as a whole and have no way to judge the arm on its own.
Bearings are super tight. It mates well with my DL-160 and the combination has tracked everything I've thrown at it.
I'm inclined to think it is a very good arm.

Congratulation's.
That's a vey nice TT, but, I hate platters with strobes & the Kenwood is, well? That's just me.
I prefer hidden strobes as well ...like the way Luxman does it.
But, the looks of the Kenny are fine by me ...more importantly it gets the job done and the price was right.

Some of these old direct drives can still be found at a reasonable price and can do great job of making music. I found KD750 for $250 2 years ago. Shouldn't have sold it, but a friend is putting it to good use.
Good luck on the new part of your life!
TR
$250 for a 750 was a good deal. I'm very impressed with the 3070 and given my experience with cheap modern tables (like the Music Hall 2.2 and Denon DP-300F) I think the old Kenny was a steal.
