Question for owners. In the manual it says you can use the paper or vinyl platter mat, however they recommend leaving it bare. What do you all do?

Herbies Way Excellent Mat on mine
Thanks again for all the replies. It's been a busy week so no listening. Hopefully I will this weekend.
Herbies didn't work in my system....sucked the life out of the music
For my Aries 3 I am using a Herbie's Audio mat - did not like the bare alum choice.
I tried it bare....not for me. In my system, its a definite step backwards. Sounds "tizzy, and nervous"
I changed my mind....I think the lack of that rubber mat is the more natural.
So bare it is. I have been using the rubber mat so it will be interesting to see if I notice a difference.
I'm not sure why I automatically put the rubber on. I'm usually one that will default to the manufactures recommendations.
Thanks to all that answered.
Less than 20 hours of listening, but so far I love this table with the Ortofon Bronze 2M.
...
The first way to try any product is how the manufacturer suggests. Record on bare platter.
IMO, at least for that table,(I have one)it works best.
The paper mat must be for the REALLY obsessive owner how doesn't want to scuff up the platter. The rubber mat does seem to impart a subtle dullness to the dynamics, although another owner may say improves the sonics through their system.
If you are concerned about keeping the platter immaculate, a simple damp cloth does the job. Minor blemishes can get rubbed out with a minute dab of toothpaste with the cloth.
Mine is developing a nice dull patina.
Every VPI Classic, regardless of arm or plinth, has not used anything between the platter and the record. Never a mat, or a sheet of paper. Nothing.
Yup

VPI has been including a grey rubber mat for the Classic series turntables for at least a year. They are now including a VPI logo slip-mat.

Hi ,
I have a TNT 6 w/ the Classic Aluminum Platter upgrade and I don't use any mat. But I'm using the VPI Periphery Ring & HRX record weight .

Interesting. Which platter did you have before the upgrade and how would you describe the sound difference?
What I had before was the thick acrylic platter w/c was dull , opaque and dry sounding . When I replaced it w/ the Classic Aluminum platter bass became tighter , more dynamic , more open, livelier presentation.
