I got an Ortofon Windfield which replaced an LPS which I thought was getting a bit long in the toothe...the Windfield was recommended to me by someone whose opinion I greatly value...a name that all on these pages know. Anyway....after very carefully setting it up, the sound was very disappointing....nothing compared to the LPS..little depth/air, tubby bass, lyrics to songs were foggy, and difficult to understand. BREAk IN....PLEASE BREAK IN.... after 50 or so LPS, the sound is just now starting to get better. I'm writing this not for any of you, but as hope for me. (VPI Superscoutmaster/Rim Drive/Classic Platter/3D arm.
Follow Ups:
I had about the same experience with my new Nagaoka MP300 cartridge some time ago. Sometimes I felt that it sounded too mellow, subdued and polite, but then it opened up, especially when I hooked the TT to the heavily and professionally modded Eico ST-40 amplifier.
Now it has huge dynamics with just a hint of coloration...
Take you time, check the VTA, etc...
Perhaps you are expecting to much? Did you really think that cartridges at that level are going to have varying degrees of better? Slightly different, perhaps, but better?

Give it some time.
I'am sure your someone's opinion you greatly value would not steer you wrong.
Could it be the new cartridge does not match up well with your gear ,tonearm, phono preamp, etc, as good as the LPS did?
I wonder what can physically change on a cart as it breaks in such that it sounds different? Suspension maybe? I know it can happen as I've experienced it myself.
