Which new semi-auto turntable would your buy?
Denon dp300f ($330) or Thorens td190-2 ($580 LPGear). Or is there another semi-auto/auto turntable priced between them that I'm missing?I'm looking for a semi-auto or full auto table because it has to be installed in an existing enclosed cabinet and a full manual turntable would be to hard to use. I am using a vintage '91 Denon receiver and diy SEAS Froy 3 speakers.

I bought a Music Hall MMF-2.2 manual turntable for now at a good price locally off of CL. It has a small footprint and is a perfect fit for a drawer on my Salamander Synergy audio cabinet. I still want a semi-auto table but that will come at a later date.
Onkyo has a new turntable out that looks pretty interesting. It looks like it has a Technics SL-1200 arm on it. $499.99. The model # is CP-1050

You are right, it is. I just thought maybe he might like it and change his mind about the semi auto part. If purchased I would buy from a dealer that takes returns. This turntable does not have any reviews yet. Just because it looks good does not mean it is good. I am sure we have all found this out one way or another.....
No strobe either.

Still might be just the ticket for those budget phono pre's you have been checking out. Did you get that piece of Shiit yet? When I read that I about fell out of my chair with laughter.....
i now have the passive preamp, DAC and phono preamp. Also found a little Adcom power amp if I want to go back to separates.

I currently own a Denon dp-300f and use it quite often. I have worn out the stock cartridge (at 3600) and have since ordered a Grado Black. It's pretty good, certainly not a toy as people may think. I couple of things you should know before a purchase. It's tone arm height can not be adjusted. It weights @ 12 pounds, not really an issue but some of the fake SL Technics 1200 weight quite a bit more. It's resell value would be just over half of the list price if it doesn't work out for you. If you can find this unit used, that would be a great deal in my opinion.
Other than that, I love the fact I can surf the web with the TT going and not have to get up every 10 to 15 minutes after a record is over!
Never having owned or auditioned the Thorens, I can't really compare the two 'tables under consideration. However, I am also a DP-300F owner and have used mine almost daily since the summer of 2011 with reliable, trouble-free operation. I was happy enough with the stock cartridge, but, liking change once in a while, have also been pleased with a Shure M97xE, Sumiko Black Pearl, Grado Green1, and, at present, the Sumiko Oyster. Though it fronts a simple, low-cost bedroom system for me, the DP-300F manages to present compelling music. The front-mounted auto-start and stop buttons would likely be convenient for the OP's planned placement within a cabinet.
They show up in the $500 range and clobber either of the two decks you list. I wish I hadn't sold mine a couple of years ago. There's even an inmate who specializes in restoring/upgrading them.

OK, but I may not end up w/ the Technics 1600 unless it's black. I will start to look for a used vintage semi-auto TT that is not silver.
the last time I checked with him about getting another one, he was backed up and could not get to it for a few months.
Might check with him. He might already have one he could restore/upgrade for you.
A lot of SL-1900s were black. Be sure whatever technics you get is an MKII version. MKIs were servo speed control. MKIIs are quartz lock speed control.

You guys must be lucky, it's getting to the point where a top notch 1600 mkII in the Canadian market can fetch $800-$1k easily.
Does scottrt have a web site?
$600+. Four years ago, I paid $165 for mine in somewhat rough shape. When word got out they basically were an automatic SL-1200 with suspended subchasis, prices went way up.

I'm thinking I might actually prefer sl 1700 mkii, same but auto-return only if not mistaken ... had to watch that go by a few months ago, real nice one too!
Go for the extra bucks and go for the Thorens. The Denon looks like a toy!
