I bought three albums, Surfer Girl, Little Deuce Coupe, and Shut Down Volume 2.
Surfer Girl is beautiful, just an outstanding reissue that cuts any previous version of the album I've ever heard.
But the other two records...the sonics are spoiled by booming plosives. Plosives are mostly "P" sounds; almost every time one of the Beach Boys sings a word starting with "P" there's a sound almost like bass feedback. Which would be a possibility except I also ripped the albums to CD using headphones (no acoustic feedback to the TT) and the plosives are an issue even when I play the albums on my iPod. In other words I hear it on the speakers when I play the LPs and also hear it on headphones so it's not an acoustic feedback issue.
It's not every song but it's enough to be annoying. I don't think my original Capitol versions do that.
Anybody else notice this or is it just me?

Follow Ups:
Just got my copies from Acoustic Sounds.
These sound REALLY good. Dead quiet vinyl. Highly detailed and beautiful warm vinyl sound.
On my system I don't hear any plosives problems.
HIGHLY recommended for Beach Boys fans.
I was thinking of pulling the trigger on Little Deuce Coupe as Be True to Your School is my daughter's favourite Beach Boys Song, Now I will pass. Did you ever play your capitol lp?
.
I have rips of the old Capitol copies loaded to my spare iPod.
No plosives. (I'm at work right now, won't be able to spin the LPs for a few hours yet).

However, if those 3 are the only records with the problem, they may have just ramped up the treble to make up for tape age and that would increase the problem as well.
It's a solid bass "POP" one almost every "B" or "P" sound. No sibilance at all on the "S" sounds. That's one of the positive things about the reissues.
It's not acoustic feedback either, since the speakers were off when I ripped the albums to digital.

and that is without actually hearing them. the "P"losives are from not using a mic screen to stop the popping "P"s. really nothing like sibilance.
...regards...tr
Singers often use a foam (plastic?) covering over the mike to eliminate that.....sounds like the "Boys" forgot this when recording this album.
I have original Capitols, don't recall this issue on the original pressings.

that Kevin would have heard the problem along the way?
I have the stereo remix of Pet Sounds done by mark linett in 1999 (Capitol), and it's fabulous. for whatever reason, that particular release went out of print in short order. the credits for this 'new' stereo version of Pet also list mark linett on the team, along with kevin, so i wonder what's been changed (if anything) this time around.
I might be able to improve the other two reissues by turning the subwoofers off when I play them. Hope so because other than the plosive issue they also have excellent sonics.
By the way, who sings the line "Don't be afraid to try the greatest sport around" in "Catch a Wave?" Is it Dennis Wilson or Al Jardine?

According to The American Federation of Musicians contract sheets for the dates July 14, and July 16, 1963, Catch a Wave was recorded by just the five guys (no studio musicians supplementing...yet): brian, mike, carl, dennis, and david marks. this was one of the periods in which al jardine had left the band to return to school, thus no Al on this LP. The vocal tracks were done on the 14th, and the backing tracks done on the 16th. South Bay Surfer, The Surfer Moon, Our Car Club, Your Summer Dream, Hawaii, Surfers Rule (take 10 used on the LP), and In My Room (take 13 makes the final cut) were also done on these dates.
btw...if you don't have one....a copy of "The Beach Boys...the Definitive Diary of America's Greatest Band On Stage And In The Studio", by Keith Badman (a Backbeat Book publication, 2004) is a MUST HAVE for any Beach Boy and Jan and Dean fan (J&D referenced many times in the book). It's a day to day diary of anything they did, anywhere they were (recording dates and info, concerts, rehearsals, et al) in FULL detail, from 1961-1976, and continues on less specifically into the 2000's.
the contract sheet for these Catch a Wave recording dates are included, but it does not specify who sang the line "Don't be afraid...." in question here. I'm gonna guess it was Dennis, in that it doesn't sound like any of the other four in attendance that day (nor does it sound like Al).
One of the reasons I love that song is the way the vocals are structured with Dennis/whoever singing the first line of the verse, then Brian next, then Mike.
First time I ever heard that song was in a high school science class. We were in the auditorium that day to watch a movie about physics or something. The movie started with some serious guy in a lab coat then quick cut to scenes of people surfing with "Catch a Wave" on the soundtrack.

here's a shot of the book cover, to aid you in case you're interested in getting a copy. and again, TONS and TONS of info.and also...that same Surfer Girl session date was co-produced by Voyle Gilmore (signed the Union contract sheet that day)...and you more than likely know his prowess (literally MADE the Kingston Trio, and produced Sinatra's finest Capitol sessions, among other credits).

Plosives.
So thanks for that. Sorry about the rekkids.
"a plosive speech sound. The basic plosives in English are t, k, and p (voiceless) and d, g, and b (voiced)."

Any movie with "Splosions" in it is her way of saying it...
"Plosives" will do as well!
