Enjoying a recent find - set of Tchaikovsky ballet's by Dorati on Mercury. Now Spinning: Swan Lake. Was reading-up on this and apparently it is a highly regarded recording - but all indications point towards it being recorded in mono only - yet my label clearly has it as a stereo. Sure sounds like stereo to me! Was this a goof-up or did Mercury "re-process" this for the LP set release?
Follow Ups:
what you really want is the original mono set. Dorati recorded all three of the big Tchaikovsky ballets in mono with Minneapolis, and they are all great. They were originally issued in deluxe gatefold sets. You can see the Swan Lake and Sleeping Beauty below. Both the performance and the sound are exceptional. They were also issued on individual discs, which were sold separately (as in the last pic). Strangely, the original Sleeping Beauty in the set is on 3 discs, however, when issued on individual discs it is on 4 records. I have not compared to see if one sounds better than the other. The early mono sets are not exceptionally difficult to find.
The best sound is on the early ones that have the mono-era MF stampers. If they have FR stampers, they are later issues from the stereo era. Those are good, but they don't have the dynamic impact of the early ones. The only Tchaikovsky ballet that Dorati recorded in stereo for Mercury was The Nutcracker, and that one is with the London Symphony.
I noticed the same box set a while ago at a shop and was stunned by the stereo labels as I was unaware of stereo versions of Swan & Sleeping Beauty. Turns out some place, either on the box or on paperwork inside the box, there's fine print that mentions the albums are rechanneled electronic stereo.
The Bay Area is a rich locale for LPs. Enjoy the hunt!
to realize.
Here is the box set cover... Great LP set!!!
