I was in Billings, Montana earlier this week and had a chance to visit a couple records stores, thrift shops and an antique mall. Here are the finds:
From a thrift shop, a 78 RPM album consisting of (4) ten inch discs.
A James Brown 2x LP set. The discs were in "VRP" innersleeves and look unplayed.
The one record I bought at an antique mall, priced at $3. I rarely buy used records in less than NM condition. This was an exception. Visually VG with a few light scratches. I believe I can transfer to WAV and remove any clicks/pops for clean sounding files.
I'd never seen this LP before. Very clean vinyl and dirt cheap so it had to come home with me.
A new reissue on (two) LPs. Very nice, gave it a spin last night.
Bought it for the music...
I already have stereo copy of this excellent 1958 LP, but this Mono copy was pristine, had 1S/1S in the deadwax, and was dirt cheap.
I don't normally grab any Ferrante & Teicher LP I find as most are mundane EZ Listening. But, this 1988 (still sealed) LP is on the "Avant-Garde" label and cover notes refer to "prepared pianos." Should be a good one.
One of the worst album covers I've seen in a long time. But hey, it's Ella Fitgerald and the wax is pristine.
New, still sealed. It's a good one!
I found this new, still sealed gem in the clearance bin at Hastings for ten bucks. Who knows why, but hell yeah, it had to come home with me.
This new, still sealed 2009 release was marked "$10.99" at Hastings. 2x LP with large poster. Clearly a mis-priced goof up? But the clerk ran it up and my receipts shows "You saved "$13.99."
Tough finding older Jazz records in decent shape. This disc looks unplayed.
From a thrift, a still-sealed Christmas record. Couldn't resist, tis the season!
From the Montana Rescue Mission thrift on 24th street, four NM Petra LPs from the '80s. Petra is a Hard Rock Christian band.
I've been looking for a NM copy of this for ages and finally found one. Yeah, I know... Coronet label records even in new condition are not the best pressings. Still, it ought to be a fun LP.
These two LPs of African music were found at the Goodwill, pristine condition.
Another find from the Gooodwill, pristine NM wax. I gave it a spin, very nice LP.
Follow Ups:
What software are you using to remove the clicks and pops from the WAV files? Do you find that the subsequently processed file negatively affects the dynamics of the original recording?
Thanks,
I've been using "Click Repair" for years. It is very good and fast. It will not damage or degrade the sound if one is conservative in the settings, which are fully adjustable. I rarely use the "default" settings, opting for a lighter approach.
I highly recommend Click Repair, having used it on thousands of transfers ranging from 110 year old shellac to LPs and 45s. I'm not saying it's the best out there, but certainly the best I've found.
I second the recommendation for Click Repair. It's inexpensive and it works. It will leave the sound of brass instruments alone without turning it into garbage. It will leave percussion alone. It sometimes is fooled, oddly enough, by operatic basses and baritones, but a light touch on the controls lets those voices through unscathed.
There are two companion software packages that I like as well: DeNoise and DeNoise LF. DeNoise deals with steady-state noise such as tape hiss and the noise inherent to vinyl. DeNoise LF deals with rumble and hum. It's really amazing how many records are afflicted with hum that isn't part of the reproducing equipment. European records are often cursed with 50 Hz hum.
There's also a free item from the same source, called Equalizer. It will take something digitized using RIAA equalization and apply the correct compensation to match the original curve--for instance, pre-RIAA English Decca FFRR records.
Thanks, I'll look it up.

Seek and yee shall find.
I have a variation on "the one you bought for the music." It's also Audio Fidelity with a differnt cover and it's just Port Said.
The reel to reel tape of that is quite good and I may prefer the sonics of that over the LP.
That Ahmad Jamal LP is one of my favorites. It gets played quite a bit.
in your studio while gazing outdoors into that wide, uncluttered, Wyoming landscape. I also like Pete Johnson's boogie woogie music. However, it looks like that Port Said nudist leaned too close over the tide pool and attracted a couple limpets!
I'm spinning "Good Dog Happy Man" right now, finishing up on side two (of four). Fantastic record. The music is superb and the sound quality is as good as it gets. It appears to be a USA release but the discs were pressed by Pallas in Germany. My girl Trixie and I are loving it.
Your dogs are absolutely adorable and look like they would walk to top of the Tetons with you.
I thought that was only on CeDeeeee now i have to find the LP.

That was my first intro to Frisell (and still arguably my fav), can't believe you found it on LP. I've got 8 Frisells and all but 1 are CeeDee, including Good Dog, Happy Man. Enjoy. BTW, I love seeing what a man with 30k+ records still can find while scrounging. Keep the posts coming Dave.
