Greetings.
I'm looking at buying Charlie Parker with Strings on vinyl and like to know any views you may have as to the best pressing.
I'd really love some lush string sound and some reedy sounding sax. I can never listen to the high 'screeching' harsh texture of some 50's pressing and wonder if this true of the later pressings too. May be the early pressing sounds great - I don't know.Has anyone got the mono or stereo version or 50's pressing versus later pressings?
Your comments would be most appreciative.
Kind regards, Bob

This is technically speaking a 78 RPM era, very early LP era recording. So, it's not going to be the best fidelity. Serviceable sounding. The Mercury LP, Clef, or early Trumpeter Label Verve LP is the best you'll find. And remember, this is pre RIAA LP curves you are dealing with.
The sound quality is going to be only so good from 1949-1950 recordings. I would avoid any reissue labeled "Stereo" as it'll be fake stereo.
I can't claim to knowing what the "best" is but FWIW, the Japanese pressings I own (and one original 78 on Mercury) sound decent.
I have the Japanese Verve pressings of "Charlie Parker With Strings" (single LP) and the Japanese ten LP box set "Charlie Parker On Verve 1946-1954" which includes many of these sessions.
That box set is very good if you don't already have it and it comes with a printed discography that is very thorough and detailed.
