Hello,
I posted a subject on the General Asylum and Abe suggested I just post it up on the Vinyl Asylum for further responses. I'd appreciate any advice you have for me.
My current cart is a Benz MicroGold 0.5mV. My new ZYX Cart 0.24mV )internal impedance 4ohms and impedance load .100 ohms) will be quieter by approx 6.4db.
My current older Cinemag 3440 SUT has a ratio 1:16 on the low gain and 1:32 on high gain. I prefer the sound using the low gain but will need a higher ratio to equalise volume.
Bob from Bob's Devices has recommended the Sky30 with a low ratio of 1:15 and high gain 1.30. He says it is more airy than the 3440 model which was originally designed for microphones.
But i don't understand how that will help equalise volume in the Zyx if I want to play on the Low gain setting of 1:15 Sky30 unless I switch to high gain.
I prefer the sound on the low gain setting on my 3440 and assume that I will also prefer the lower gain setting on the Sky30 apart from volume loss.
I don't know why I perceive a sound difference between using the high versus low gain ?
Any comments or advice would be most appreciated.
Any other suggestions for high quality SUT's that would deliver the gain (in allow setting) ?
Thx so much, Bob

I'm listening to Jackie McLean's Capuchin Swing through one right now with an Ortofon Royal GMII SPU (.2mV; 6R DCR). Gorgeous! You can't go wrong.
Hi Bill,
Great. The Sky 30 looks like it could be amazing.
Do you have that on high or low gain?
Cheers, Bob
Hi Bob,I have it on high gain, which brings 5.4 mV to my MM input, just about ideal. You can ask Bob (of Bob's Devices) to run the calculations for your cartridge. He's extremely helpful.
Best,
Bill

The best way to get a decent answer to almost anything is to ask a genius who eats and breathes the stuff you want to know about, right?

Actually, the SKY 30 is recommended to be used in HIGH (1:30) for the ZYX. You would use LOW (1:15) for the Benz.
Thank you Bob and John for your recent comments.
They are very helpful.
John,
Do you use the high or low setting with your 1131's and your DL-S1?
I first used the low setting, but when I tried the high setting I thought it sounded better, so now I use the high setting. It actually loads down the cartridge pretty heavily because the high setting reduces volume level by about one or two decibels. However, it sounds more musical to me.
The rule of thumb with anything vinyl is to use the setting that sounds best to you.
Best regards,
John Elison

That may or may not be true. The sound quality difference between the Sky 30 and the 3440 is significant. I have owned the 3440 and I now own the CM-1131, which is built like the Sky 30 but with turns-ratios of 1:20 and 1:40, and the difference in sound quality is like night and day. I could never go back to a 3440 and be happy. You would need to try the Sky 30 in your system to know whether its sound quality would be worse or better on the higher turns ratio.
I know it is nice to have the relative volume of your phono cartridge matched to your other sources, but it is not a necessary requirement. As long as you can turn up the volume control high enough to achieve your desired listening level, you are in good shape. Therefore, it is always better to use the transformer setting that give the best sound quality. On the other hand, the difference between the newer CineMag transformers compared to the older 3440A is very significant and well worth the price difference in my opinion. Having had both the 3440A and the newer 1131 in my system for direct comparison, I could never go back to the 3440A.
Good luck,
John Elison
Hi John,
Did you build your 1131 suts yourself or were they factory made? I have a pair of 1131s and I'm looking for a schematic and suggestions on layout of parts to build my own.
Thanks,
David
Mine was built by Bob at Bob's Devices.
I see on the Cinemag website that there is no sale to the public....
that I could get this without the markup as I need a SUT for "His Master's Noise", which is built into the circuit...
