WTF = Which Turntable FridayTwo tables are presented below. You get to pick one, for free. Since free is a good price, take one ...even if you have no use for it.
Due to jetlag, last week’s WTF was decidedly uninspiring ...I just wasn’t feeling it. So I’m making it up to you guys this week with two high-end choices suggested by Penguin.
Here is what I know about these turntables ...they are black, have linear tracking arms, appear heavy and are very, very expensive. My knowledge of them has now been thoroughly exhausted.
And here they are ...
Walker Proscenium Black Diamond V
Rockport Sirius III
I’ll take the Rockport, simply because it looks far more impressive. The Walker may sound better for all I know ...but to me it looks like styling was either ignored or unimportant. Yup ...I admit it. For me, looks matter.
I think I’d leave the box sealed, sell it and then buy the best example of an L-O7D I could find, maybe upgrade the rest of my system too ...and buy another car so I’d stop piling miles on my Cooper. The rest of the money would be likely be spent on records, wine, bourbon ...and maybe a watch.
So, which of these sonic marvels floats your boat ...and would you keep it, assuming this game was real.
Thanks for playing.
Have a great weekend.
Dean.

Rockport, because it sounds like a place on the coast of Maine.
To top that, simply can't resist the floor level British sport car's instrument cluster. How can anyone get great vinyl reproduction without those?
brit sports car analogies?
in my experience, the damn thing's just about as reliable, too.
in their defense, however, british sports cars tended to be engaging experiences.
k
Rockport on aesthetics alone.

It's nice to pipe dream about these "choices", right? I'll never be able to afford any one of them but given the choice i go for the Rockport. It's a SOTA TT.
I've devoted my life since 2001 to collecting analog records and refurbing vintage TT. A modern high end TT will have to outplay my modded Lenco L75 first. And then my (hopefully repaired) Thorens Td125mk2. And then my Sony PS-2250 DD, ca. 1970, and then my....
I say, FWIW, put your money into your record collection. It's about the original analog pressings.

You are one mean guy Dean. Those are really pretty turntables, but the Rockport looks so, well, majestic, I wouldn't be able to pass it up.

I second you. Rockport engineering is about as good as it comes.
or maybe the other way around. Keep it, hell yeah, definitely!!!

Give me rhythm or give me death!
cutting board included...!

Both seriously scary!
The Walker setup in the Demo I attended sounded flat and two dimensional

I'd really prefer a Continuum Caliburn for free. Can you arrange that?
If not, I'll take the Walker.

My wife would be most upset if I cut a hole in the carpet so I guess it will have to be the Walker.
.
That's a piccie of MikeL's Rockport. He'll probably see this thread.
I was fortunate enough to hear this turntable one evening. And I got to compare it to some very interesting vintage turntables including a nicely updated Garrard 301 and a Technics SP10 mk III.
That evening the Rockport definitely floated my boat.
As to the Walker Black Diamond; I've not had the opportunity to hear one. I am confident it will acquit itself very, very well. And produce a wonderful sound none of us would want to toss out of our listening rooms. Having read several reviews of this turntable and its predecessors...and seen several photos of the setup, I am somewhat turned off by all the clutter and accessories it takes to set one up the way Lloyd does it. Appearance-wise it lacks the elegance of the Rockport.

I still want it :)....Mikel wont mind, he has a bunch other toys

I think he moved on to another highly interesting DD TT. I haven't heard that one.
But the Rockport has captured my interest since the first time I had read of it circa 2000 or thereabouts. It's mine. It's gotta be mine. Precious, my precious....
-Steve
shame...
speaking of old photos of yours, and it is totally off the original subject
have you checked how the caps are wearing on your SP 10? I am thinking about my rebuild and based on your research i am leaning to use graphite filled Nylatron or tecapeek PVX. wonder how the dimple on the cap's now...

re: sp10 mkII thrust caps.
I've got Torlon 4203 in there. I haven't checked it since the one week trial period. Sound-wise, it seems to be 100% good. After a 1-year period I'll take the bearing out and look at it again. I'll post a pic to the site at that time. 'til then I do expect lesser wear than the original nylatron.
re: graphite impregnated nylatron. Hmmmm. Maybe worth a try. Tecapeek I'm not familiar with.

Neither is happening!
But I'll take the Walker, only because Valin loves it so.
It has always been my favorite turntable above all others every made. Unfortunately, I've never been able to afford it until now. Free is good. Free is fantastic! Wow!
Fremer did a very positive write-up on that table a few years back, IIRC.

you did not!!! Why did you have to do this to me? I want both, but if i can take only one, then it will be the Walkport no wait it will be to Rocker...can we mix and match? Ok,,,here we go again...

Ok then Rockport it is, unless i change my mind and take the
Ok I need the Rockport...it will have to be the Rockport. Rockport....but what if the Walker is better?
Siriusly :) this is one of the most daunting decision, and with one of them being a direct drive....but but....I need a Rockport, telling myself i need a Rockport....Rockport...
Ok i take the Rockport.
I will cry my eyes out, i had a chance to get a Walker !!!! and i chose a Rockport....

Mostly because it comes with a stand included. I prefer the looks of it too and I believe it's a direct drive so that's something to consider as I already own the world's best belt drive. (Winky face)
Walker: because it traverses the record right to left vs the Rockport which goes south to north.
The older I get, the more I just want to enjoy my records and not fiddle with some contraption that would have Rube Goldberg scratching his head.
If I were shopping anywhere near that price range, I'd probably just get a Classic Direct and call it a day.
...they both look awkward to operate.
I prefer pivot arms and a place to rest my hand while I cue.
I'm old fashioned that way.

Rockport
I'll choose this one - a bit on the Looks - but also the total package - Stand pumps etc....
Thanks for posting!
They are both impressive. I've read several reviews on the Walker and all have pretty much drooled over it. I'll take mine without the drool, though.
enjoy,
mark
