I went to Brook Berdan's on Friday to drop off my VPI MkIV for a cartridge setup. We were the only customers in the store so we were able to have a demonstration of their high end room. I consisted of a pair of Magico S5 speakers, Jadis Amp and Preamp and the VPI Direct Drive. I did not have the 3D arm. Needless to say it was magnificent but, at $350,000 it better be.
I think my system compares fairly well with it given I may have spent only $7500. One of the big differences I think with the noise floor. The detail was just so good even at low db levels it was still both quiet and detailed. My friend, who is not an audiophile was completely blown away as was I. The long and short of it is, DIY components along with a decent turntable still provides beautiful music and I am very happy.

I have a vague idea of the cost of each of those components you name, except for the Magico S5 speakers. At first blush it would not seem that the individual retail prices add up to that much money. Can you itemize?Sorry, I now see that John Ellison asked the same question down below. Still, it seems hard to get to a $350,000 total, unless the Jadis preamp and amp are in the six figure range, each.

What did the rest of the system consist of especially the phono preamp?
Jottow2,
The preamp was Jadis, I did not get the model id. I did not ask what the cartridge or phono preamp was. I should have now that I think of it. I was just overwhelmed by the music quality. Oh to have a spare $350000 that I would not miss!!

It must have had very expensive interconnects if the price was $350,000. The speakers are only $38,000 a pair and I'm pretty sure Jadis doesn't cost all that much. What gives you the impression its price tag was $350,000.
Thanks,
John
Well, we asked the salesman. Of course he could have been including the CD player and the room treatments and all the cables. My friend asked how much would it cost to have this room in his house.
I am not sure how informed the salesman was. He did have trouble telling me what the different model numbers were on the equipment we were listening to.

Part timer, eh?

I think.
"I did not have the 3D arm". You don't have one on your Mk IV, or the VPI Direct Drive you heard did not have one?
It makes a big difference on both tables. I thought the DD came only with the 3D arm.
Sorry, I blew the proof reading. My VPI has a OL RB250 the Direct Drive supposedly did not have the 3D arm. However, looking at the VPI site the 3d tonearm shown looked exactly like the one on the table at Brook's.
Thanks for bringing that to my attention.

The arms look about the same. Fremer did a recorded files sample where you go to judge the difference if any ... the printed arm is a tad better but a superficial listen may give it to the traditional arm for sounding a little more exciting.
If it is cheaper, great!
