Thought I'd help out Dean and take some of the load off. I like WTF, and I'm glad Dean started it. Maybe we can all step up from time to time to come up with a good scenario that stimulates debate, thought and conversation.
My scenario is simple. You have a budget of $3000.00. You must buy new product at normal retail price. Period.
These are your choices. You must spend no more than 1/3rd of the budget on a cartridge and no more than 2/3rd's of the budget on a table.
Or, you can spend no more than 2/3rd's of the budget on a cartridge and 1/3rd on the table.
1) How do you prioritize your budget?
2) You must name the equipment and it's cost.
I'll go first. I feel the table contributes more to overall fidelity than the cartridge. For this reason, I'd go with a VPI Scout at approx. $2G's and the Ortofon Quintet Black at approx. $1G. Yes, I'm a dealer for both products, but it's what I prefer, which is why I'm a dealer for the product.

Follow Ups:
Rega RP6 + Exact: 1990$.
Then I'd just add a Rega Brio R for 895.00$.
This will make a nice synergistic system.
Total: 2885$
Maintaining a vinyl rig is PITA enough, I've no desire to go mongrel approach. Hence the proven combo from a cartridge to the amplifier that I know it works together.
For left over 100 bux, I'll hit a record store. ;)
Not based on experience, but based on looking at the glossy product brochures,......and some positive reviews, I like this choice.

If you're eyesight is like mine, or you don't know clicking on the "A" brings up an info page, that's a ZYX R50 cartridge on a VPI Traveler.
Give me rhythm or give me death!
You just broke your own rules. You said you have to pay full retail, the you approximate...
The last current model turntable I heard was an SL-1200. Prior to that it was a VPI HW-19MKIV. I just don't consider new tables anymore and haven't listened to any since I left the business.
So, based on my experience with VPI (and your recommendation), I am going to go with the Scout, but will change the cartridge to a Denon DL-S1 ($950) which I own and like very much.
I spent about an hour researching an answer to your question. I desperately wanted to use a Jelco SA-750D arm (about $750), but it seems no one makes an affordable armless table anymore. The closest I came was with the Sota Comet, but it looks like it is now only available with a Rega arm and its effective length does not match up with the Jelco.
I really like the design of the Funk Firm "Little Super Deck", but at $2,495 it wouldn't meet your prerequisite of a 2/3 - 1/3 division.
Thanks much for posting this weeks WTF in such thought provoking fashion. I appreciate it. I'm glad you like the premise and hope others join in.
So, how did I do? Will the DL-S1 work okay on the Scout?
Dean.
reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
I see no reason why it wouldn't sound it's best on a unipivot arm like the JMW, considering all of the adjustment parameters you have to bring out its best. I have a friend with the DL-S1, and I liked it. Of all Denon carts, the one I've liked the most is the DL-103D, provided it's on the right low mass arm. In fact, the 103D is primarily why I've decided to keep the Signet XK-50 tonearm- the combo is just killer.
I appreciate your response, and was glad to help out.

I screwed up, got real busy this morning and forgot about it...
so is is still not too late.
USA VS Germany and vintage
Dual 721 vs Well Tempered Classic, both have strong points and weaknesses. I have one of each and like them both.

I would buy a new Technics SL-1210Mk2 from B&H Photo for $1899 with free shipping. I would order the fluid tonearm damping system from KAB for $149 plus $10 shipping. Then I would buy an Audio Technica AT-ART7 low-output moving coil phono cartridge from Amazon for about $915 including shipping. Total cost = $2973.

Technics SL1210?
What is this? I thought the SL1200 was gone ten years ago.....

I guess it's a new-old-stock deck.
C'mon , John. That poor horse is flayed to the bone!
You need to listen to some of the modern product typified by the Traveler and Clearaudio.
The 1210 MG with KAB damper and a balanced re-wire into Aqvoxx was good but below the level of the current Traveler, as well as the Clearaudio I auditioned. And back then sold for a reasonable $800.
Well, I need to have quartz-locked direct-drive with electronic speed selection and a tonearm with antiskating not to mention tonearm damping. But, thanks for the suggestion. I'm sure there are those who would love the cheap decks you mention.

td-124 etal.
Nice table though.

I'd go with a Pro-Ject RM 9.2 @ $1999.00 Turntable and a Dynavector 20X2-L @ $850.00. The TT is more important to the overall sound so the lion's share goes to the TT. $150.00 to have it set-up.

Who pays retail ?
depends on the store your buying from.
(What ever happened to the "warehouse" stereo add's from back in the 70's)
Hi, risabet,
I finished posting my reply and low and behold I see another recommendation of a Pro-Ject 9.2 and a Dynavector cartridge. Great minds DO think alike. :-)

Tom
Hi, Curious,
The price point you chose is a good one. There are some excellent turntables and cartridges in that (full retail) price range. I like your choice but would probably go for the Pro-Ject RM 9.2 because I like the design of their tonearms and the 'table is a straight-forward implementation of mass-loading and suspension. And my bias for the 17D3 is based on hearing it paired with a mmf-7 (Pro-Ject) turntable. They play well together.
I don't think you can go too far astray with a $3000 budget. I'm interested in seeing what others have to say.
Regards,
Tom
I was posting while you were and we came up with almost the same set-up. Same TT, same cartridge manufacturer though different models.
