The title says it all... :)
How does Ortofon Super OM30/OM40 cartridges compare to vintage Stanton 681EEE MkI cartridge with Jico Shibata stylus?
On my Thorens TD-126MkI with a SME3009 S2 Imp arm (removable headshell) I have an Ortofon Super OM cartridge with 30 and 40 styluses.
Couple weeks ago, I bought a minty Technics SL-151MkII Quartz with a SME3009 series II Improved (fixed headshell).
I would like to try something different on my new Technics.
The Ortofon OM30/40 on my Thorens sounds very neutral and detailed, but sometimes it can be too polite on some vintage rock LPs.
I also had a brand new Shure V15 Vxmr and I hated it! :)
The sound was boring, "blanket over the tweeter" kind of dull and dark.
In my drawer I have a vintage Stanton 681EEE MkI cartridge body.
Maybe i should get a Jico Shibata for it?
Did anybody here had a chance to compare better Ortofon super OM bodies to Jico Shibata on Stanton 681EEE?
.
Follow Ups:
Having been through the cartridge madness for many years and owning a dozen or so of many brands, including the Ortofon 540, Shure V15 type 3 with Jico stylus, a Stanton 881 with a Jico stylus and an AT20SLA, I found that I now prefer the bolder more robust sound of a nude elliptical like the Ortofon OM20 and AT130e.
The AT130e is now my favorite MM/MI in my system using low capacitance interconnects. (20pf per foot)
The more advanced profile stylus MM/MI cartridges now sound too polite and tame to me.
Maybe in my older age I just prefer more of a HiFI sound than an "audiophile sound?"
I know how a lot of LP's sound with different cartridges and I can't say I'm missing any detail. I just hear it in a different way now.
Something tells me that if you didn't like the Shure V you won't be all that thrilled with the Stanton 681EEE.
Sometimes "better" doesn't always sound better to everyone.
MC's seem to be a different animal and I have a couple that I like very much and the stylus profiles aren't the same.
I'm a big fan as well and would like to pickup a replacement stylus, but both cart and styli are oop. Picked up an EVG at 120e, but haven't tried it.
My thanks in advance,
Paul
Watch that big auction site for a NOS stylus or NOS cartridge. I bought a NOS cartridge and a NOS stylus in the last month and a NOS stylus auction ended yesterday with no buyer.
Click "worldwide" and Willam Thatcher in Germany has the NOS stylus but they are a bit pricey.
From what I've read on different forums the 120e doesn't quite do it and there's conflicking info on the Internet as to if it's a nude or bonded tip.

The ATN130E is a nude square shank .2 x .7 (sharp) elliptical on a tapered aluminum cantilever. The generator seems to be the same as the 440 and 120, 490mH and 3200 ohm impedance.
The ATN120E is a nude round shank .3 x .7 elliptical on a straight aluminum cantilever. Cu is 10 @ 100Hz. Same as a 440 or 150MLX.
For a minute AT changed the 120E to a bonded tip, but quickly recalled them. It now remains as the original.
The current ATN7V is a nude square shank .2 x .7 on a tapered cantilever. The compliance is lower - 7cu @ 100Hz. That's about 16cu @ 10Hz.

Thanks!
So, Shure V15 Vxmr will have similar sound to Stanton 681EEE with Jico Shibata?
What about my other drawer find, a lowly Technics EPC270?
I think that I remember reading some people saying that it is good with Jico SAS?
I also could buy an AT440MLa for the similar money as Jico stylus,
but I have been told that I would not get very far from the type of sound I already have with my Ortofons?
..and in case you were curious, this response curve is why you wouldn't like your VxMR. This curve is from the M97xE, but the curve is essentially the same as for the VxMR. You can see that it shelves down to be about 3dB down at 10kHz. Remarkably it is flat from there onwards to the specified limit of 25kHz (test tone not shown).

The Shure V15 VxMR won't sound the same as the 681 with Shibata. The VxMR has the tailored HF roll off (the so-called "audiophile curve") which is why you hated it! The 681 actually has a very flat response (with a matched stylus), but by the same token will sound very polite like the Ortofon. The problem is that none of the 3rd party replacement styli have the same suspension as the original. I wouldn't waste money on keeping the 681 going with a JICO. Mine has been consigned to the drawer or for when I want to play a questionable second hand disc.
The AT440MLa has a very slight hump at 10kHz but is quite neutral when properly loaded. Many people complain that it is too bright - I suspect in this situation the capacitance of the load is too high. This is the (lateral) white noise response to 23kHz for my own AT440ML on a Technics headshell (7g) on an SL1200 Mk2 tracking at 1.2g. As you can see it is essentially flat.
If you want technical excellence for a reasonable price, my personal preference is for the AT440MLa for the benefits of the MicroLine stylus.
However, my requirement is for transcription purposes so I want something that is technical neutral.
An alternative is a Denon DL110. 2juki on ebay has them for USD126 last time I bought from him. That has an elliptical tip if you prefer that profile. Lots of people enjoy this cartridge and reviews going back to the 80s suggest that it is a good allrounder. I have the DL160 as well as this, but I personally find it too bright for my taste. This may give a more exciting sound for rock material though but this genre is not my cup of tea I'm afraid!
Having been through this process myself, I have to agree with FredJ and the others though - I've got a vast collection of cartridges, and in the end you find you have many flavours, but you are never sure of what you prefer!

I never owned a Stanton 681EEE but the general opinion seems to be that they are on the softer or subdued side.
The Jico stylus may be good but it may be asking too much for it to create the sound your looking for.
I was suggesting that you may find a "lesser" nude elliptical to be more lively with more punch.
Just pay attention to the recommended loading capacitance so you may need to change the interconnect cables if your using the original SME cables because they are higher capacitance.
Some of the better cartridges with an advanced profile stylus may sound very well balanced but that can also mean dull or maybe even thin.
One day I was going through my cartridge collection and the ones that stood out for me were the Signet TK5, Ortofon OM20 and the AT130E.
After some checking I found that they were all nude ellipticals.
I've gone back to the Ortofon 540 and AT20SLA and thought they sounded very good but the AT130E in my system really makes my feet tap.
Once you hit on a cartridge that's good for you in your system you'll know it pretty quick.
Lots of people like the AT440 but I have no experience with it nor the Technics.
Along your aforementioned experience, I can relate one of my favorite
MM's is the lowly AT110e till it's broken in it's damn near hideous
(essentially unbearable) I ended up using my first one for knockin out the rocks and burnishing the groove on newly cleaned thrift finds on my old standby TD 166 Thorens, one night my woman friend came home and wanted
to spin some Jim Croce and I had my SOTA at the time temporarily disconnected from my stage, she ended up hooking up the Thorens
hen I got home I was drawn into whatever it was she was listening do I
went to my living room and the Thorens/ AT 110 was responsible for the
engaging musical experience I was so glad I'd been too indolent to mount a diff cartridge and shitcan the AT 110.There's a very pervasive audiophile belief that meaningful musical enjoyment
requires huge (ever increasing) financial expenditures.Regards Ferd

OM20, 2M Blue, 520 Ortofons and 120E ATs just sound musical to me. They are detailed but don't beat you over the head with it.

Well said Dave.
