Hi
Just snagged a sony ps x70 (actually, it snagged me). have to drive it about 400 miles in a car. How do i secure tonearm withou taking it off the table. My friend will be bring the turntable so taking the arm off is not an option. Will tonearm survive the trip - if counter-weight is removed and armtube tied down to arm-rest.. can i do anything more? More precisely will this arm get damaged ( heavier tonearm -- i dont think its a uni-pivot) if it its transported sitting in a car ?
thks

I'v done a couple road trips with turntables, as mentioned remove counter weight from tonearm, get some blue painters tape from hardware store and secure the tonearm to arm lock stand, if it has a cartridge mounted use the stylus guard, remove platter and protect it from damage, check owners manual to see if transport screws were used to lock the table. Ask owner if he has original box/packing material, manual and accessories, big bonus if so. Place/secure turntable in vehicle where it won't slide/fall if you stop quick. If in the trunk put a large pillow/cushion/thick blanket under it to cushion bumps in road.
Register & download the Owners Manual. All the information is there about securing the pieces for transport. It is vitally important to take the platter off the turntable else there is a high risk in damaging the bearing, mag stripe on the inside of the platter, or the read head (matains speed stability). Your tonearm treatment may be adequate.
Good Luck
