The original Shibata on my AT-12Sa cart is nearing the end of its life and I'm looking for a replacement. I think it may have been made for JVC by Audio Technica. It's a JVC 4DT-35X Stylus...
What say you guys?

You might try stereoneedles.com for a replacement.

...that their listing claims "No Stock!" for both the ATN12S and ATS12S?

Hi Manfred,
Just FYI, I contacted them re when they might have them in stock...their reply was "never again"
So much for that source. I'll post some info re your first post when I get back from running some domestic errands.
Thanks!

... nowadays, as due to the "comeback" of vinyl many sources for new old stock needles are drying out pretty quickly, as soon as discovered by the forum folks. A bit unfortunate for those, who come a bit late to take part in the game - while those of us, who have already stacked up during the last couple of years, can now conveniently lean back and watch the prices go up... ;)

P.S.: Oh, and just btw, I read a post from a user over on AK in the meantime - and the JVC variant he just got turned out to be a square shank nudie. So that should definitely be worth a try, if the price is nice...
Have a link? Because a pic would be nice - in order to check, whether it's an AT-made original or a 3rd party generic. But in general: Yup, the genuine JVC replacement needle would actually be AT-made and good quality. However, I'm not quite sure about the exact configuration of the JVC variant - 'cause the original ATN12S is always bonded, while there are both bonded and nude exemplars of the ATS12S, which would fit just as well on the AT12Sa body and usually is similarly priced. Cantilever is tapered alu in all three cases, btw.
So, if you can get the JVC needle for less than the ATN12S and ATS12S, it would seem an attractive deal. However, if the JVC wouldn't be at least a good bit cheaper than the ATS12S, the latter might be worth a gamble: If you're lucky, you might get an exemplar with square shank nudie, which practically would be pretty much as good as the ATN14 for the AT14Sa.

Manfred,
OK, back...here's the link.
Just want to make SURE this will fit my AT12Sa.
My cart/w its original AT stylus sounds very good in my system, but stylus is definitely somewhat worn and will need to be replaced in the near future.
Would like to retain the original specs or something as close as possible. I was hoping this one would be what I was looking for. As to your observation as to nude or bonded, I guess it's the "luck of the draw". I think I would happy with either; nude preferred of course.
Any other good "Shibata" options (or others) which would mount to this cart and do it justice?
Many thanks...

Yup, that would fit - basically just the same shape as the ATS12S. So for that price: Grab it, I'd say! At least that's what I'd do, if I had a matching body in my cart collection...

Stylus arrived today; it fits the Sa cart perfectly and it was a "nudie". Square shank and all...the luck of the draw was with me this time!
Thanks Manfred.

Nice to hear (well, to read actually) that everything worked out fine for you. Congrats & have fun with your new nudie! ;)
