Doing some research before heading out to see/hear these two tables. Anyone else made this comparison or have an opinion on these two tables?
I'm not sure what to think of the magnetic bearing in the Clearaudio tonearm, but I trust both of these companies to make fine products. The VPI gets bonus points for being made in the USA (NJ yet) and optional cool colors, but I really care about the sound, reliability, and easy setup.
Anything else I should consider around $1500.00? Not likely to buy used unless it's local (SF Bay Area).

Some random thoughts from someone who owns neither of those decks but has seen them both up close and talked to owners of the Concept. I don't know anyone that has bought a Traveler yet.
1. The Concept may pose limitations on what kinds of cartridges you may be able to use. From what I understand the arm is fairly low in mass, so it's natural partners cartridge-wise will be higher compliance carts(MM or MI). Maybe others have had different results. This is what I was told by someone who owns one though.
2. The arm on the Concept is somewhat loosey goosey in handling. Not that it isn't stable across the record, it's just that it feels more like a unipivot in it's handling. That may or may not be important to you.
3. The arm on the Traveler is more stable in handling due to it's gimbal design. Thus it might also be slightly easier to set up. Mainly though, it's also higher mass so more likely to be a successful partner with mid to low compliance carts(like moving coils), if you already have one of those, or plan on trying one at some point in time.
Thats basically it. I obviously cant make a recommendation based on experience with them both so I wont even try. Just some thoughts to consider. I'm sure others that have more direct experience with both decks or other recommendations will chime in.
I was down to the same two tables and when I called to order from Music Direct they actually had a B stock VPI Scout in the same price range. I ended up going with that table instead. The only other table I had considered that is in that price range is the Rega RP6.
I haven't heard the others, but I sure love my Concept. I did upgrade the cartridge to the Aurum Beta S.
I'm interested in both of those, and a Pro-ject at $1500, and the Sota Comet. Would love to see a comparison using the same cartrige.
I have a Comet with a dynavector cartridge and am very happy with it.
Mine is in gloss finish, not the awful matt finish you see in most pics of this table.
It's a well-built, nice-looking, easy to use, good sounding table from a company with a stellar reputation.

I'd skip Project . I don't know why anybody would buy those. Poor sounding. so so built and overpriced. Clearaudio looks like better choice although the platter on one I had a chance to audition was sort of lose on the spindle , talk about German engineering ;(. I'd go with VPI . Buy american. Boring, fat and pretentious -just like we like it ;)
