Just got an email from one of the big online shops saying an ORG 45 rpm reissue of Mingus Ah Um is shipping in September. Mastered by Bernie Grundman, who mastered the excellent Classic Records 45 of this album.
I already have the Classic, which is one of the best sounding records I've heard, but will be buying this ORG issue as soon as it comes out. If nothing else, it'll be less hassle, as the Classic is on four separate one-sided records.
Follow Ups:
i'll stick with my classic...can't imagine grundman getting anymore out of it. for those who don't have the classic i hope org can get a good pressing job done.
Hi Tao,
Those Classic reissues from over a decade ago were all done on the older Bernie Grundman mastering chain which is frankly quite outclassed by his recently upgraded system including a complete Cardas rewire. Not only that but the new system allows Bernie to cut LP direct to lathe without going through the EQ board (on those occasions where the tape quality allows us to do so).
Some recent or forthcoming ORG titles cut direct to lathe include:
- Jon Hendricks Fast Living Blues
- Charlie Mingus - Mingus Ah Um
- Duke Ellington Blues In Orbit
- Blood Sweat & Tears s/t
- Duke Ellington Jazz Party In Stereo
- Aaron Neville Warm Your Heart
The Mingus Ah Um reference lacquers were played in the AR/Basis/Vandersteen room in THE Show Newport Beach and caused a minor stir in the audience (which included AJ Conti, Joe Harley, Richard Vandersteen etc.) as did the reference lacquers of the Blood Sweat & Tears.
There's more info on the upgraded mastering chain on the ORG website but let me emphasise in no uncertain terms - the older Grundman Classic masterings are not going to match what ORG and Bernie are doing right now.
Thanks. Groovenoter
thanks for taking the time to give that info. still i'm happy enough with my classic to not feel the need for another 45 though....it's a great album and hopefully those that get the org will really enjoy what 45 can do for the sound!!!
I have original 6-eye mono and stereo pressings. Impressive music, that's for sure.
