Charles Ives' "The Fourth of July"...what else?
Follow Ups:
What better way to celebrate the fourth. Gotta have a great dog or two.

Thanks to those of you who encouraged me to get Pastel Moods recently. I had been avoiding ePay, due to some rather disappointing results in the past, but I am pleased with this mono album.

Love this LP!
The Mobile Fidelity pressing of that one is pretty dang good.
wake up with Bullfrogs on your mind?"
"I will not be your fool." David Bromberg.
My face hurts from smiling too broadly and too long!
Grover Washington Jr. "Mister Magic."

Music. Window or mirror?
Tom Port and Better Records, but about 15 years ago, I purchased David Bromberg's "Long Way From Here" album based upon his recommendation, and have been a fan ever since. If you don't have it in your collection, you should make a point of getting a copy. I have had the pleasure of seeing Bromberg and his big band live at the Keswick in Philly (an electrifying performance - one of the best concerts I have ever been to) and in Harrisburg.
David Bromberg is such a trip. I remember back to the early 70's, maybe late 60's, when I worked at the Philly Folk Festival and first heard him. What a wonderful performer live. His recordings only hint at his greatness. He also did wonderful work w/ Dylan and Jerry Jeff. Pretty much quit performing for many years to build violins and sell them in Wilmington Delaware. What a loss to the world of music. Thank G-d he came to his senses and is performing aagain!
played with David Amram, Jorma Kaukonen, Arlo Guthrie and Trombone Shorty during their individual sets and did a great show with the big band!

From left: MacKerras/New Philharmonia Orch and the Mussorgsky's Pics at an Exhibition. On Vanguard Cardinal. I like this one pretty well.
Mahler's 9th Symphony by Abravanel/Utah Symphony. Currently I prefer Abravanel/Utah symphony for Mahler recordings. The Vanguard Cardinal series sound excellent.
Szell/Wagner, Cleveland Orchestra and Wagner highlights from the Ring. A good sounding Columbia Masterworks. Who woulda' thunk it!
I haven't decided on what's next. I'll take suggestions from this list, perhaps.
-Steve
I really like the Vanguard Cardinal Series too. I have that "Pictures at an Exhibition" album recorded at the All Hallows Church in London. Anytime you see Joanna Nickrenz's name as a recording engineer on the back cover, it pretty much guarantees a great sounding album.
I also have that Columbia Masterworks Wagner. Agreed, one of the better early 70's Columbia recordings.
'Sample copy' from the 70's. Sounds great...
Happy Independence Day everyone!
Stars & Stripes Forever.
From Horowitz in Recital:
40-50's was Horowitz's prime. Even with this low fidelity recording, I can hear his greatness.
Then funky Edgar Winter Group's Jasmine Nightdream's jazzy 'All Out'.

Von Karajan/ Philharmonia Orchestra AngelDynamic, quiet vinyl, full w/ wonderful highs. A wonderful reading and performance of these works. A NM- Goodwill find.

1. Oscar Peterson Trio/ Affinity
2. Stan Getz & Horace Silver/ Pair of Kings on Baronet Records
3.Red Roney plays Superbop with Sam Noto et al
4. Jack Montrose Sextet/st, on Pacific Jazz(red vinyl)and another change in mood and in concert w/ the holiday.....

Some powerful moments, every few moments :)
at the old Oriental Theater in Portland, Oregon. Must have been 1972. Summer. Cold Blood was also on the bill and for a finale the horn sections from both CB and TOP combined. I forget what all was played but in general recall a very good performance. Very tight. Good musicianship.
I also recall the fire marshal getting up on stage, fitting the exact personna that the flower power generation would ridicule, and telling everyone to not be lighting up and smoking whatever it was they were smoking. The atmosphere in that room was rather smoky and with an organic pungent overtone ;-). After the fire marshal, the concert continued, the audience continued doing what it had been and all was well.

Steve, that sounds eerily familiar to the experience I had seeing BS&T in a free concert in Central Park in NYC, the summer of 1974 I believe.
A cool thing about Tower of Power is that they've been touring ever since, and still can pack a house playing those same tunes. The playing is terrific from the YT videos I've seen, and I believe one or two of them probably quality for Social Security now :o
Jim
and Kenny Burrell- "All Day Long",
Both recently acquired via an antique shop.

I've always enjoyed Horace Silver. He's written some wonderful compositions and his LPs always have excellent musicians on them, such as, Hank Mobley, Junior Cook, Donald Byrd, and Louis Hays, and that 's only on 6 Pieces of Silver, not to mention his many other great LPs.

I only own a few of his BN titles, I don't see them very often used, but picked up the 6 Pieces (Liberty) for 7 bucks (VG+)
I did get to see him around 20 years ago over in Oakland.

I was never so fortunate to hear him live. I don't typically see them used either. I had the good fortune to pick up several in the halcyon days of vinyl collecting in the early 1980's when everyone was dumping their vinyl to jump on the CD band wagon. Oh how I wish I had bought and kept even more vinyl than I did. Have a happy 4th.
Yes, we now have power on our block after 5 days of outage. I'll be spinning some platters soon, but right now there's a great Janis Joplin special on the radio.

Actually, I'd rather go with this:
Ohio. There was a bad storm that took out power in a lot of neighborhoods around here. We put food from the refrigerator in coolers that we filled with ice every day. Fortunately we had a gas stove and a grill. The trick to keeping cool (or at least not roasting) was closing the windows and shades during the day and opening them a crack at night. Of course that's what people did before A/C. But it was pretty hairy.
Now spinning:
Johnny Cash, Now Here's Johnny (original Sun).
Some LPs this morning:
Esquivel - Other Worlds Other Sounds, RCA Victor LSP-1753
Eugene Chadbourne - Country Protest, Fundamental SAVE-7
The Louisiana Aces - S/T, Rounder 6003
The Louisiana Aces is a first time spin, a recent thrift shop acquisition. Great record! Very well recorded, near mint condtion, and I love the music, which is a blend of traditional Cajun and Honky Tonk.
Hadn't seen these for at least 20 years and found them in a box.
Run DMC: Walk this Way/King of Rock 45
The Police: Do Doo Do Doo and Don't Stand So Close to Me, badge shaped pic disc
J. Geils Band: Centerfold and Freeze Frame, potato head pic disc
.
Had one of those nights when I just could not stop listening. Stayed up until 1:30.Santana: Caravanserai
Buddy Miles: Them Changes
Sea Level: Cats On The Coast
Renaissance: Live At Carnegie Hall
Stephen Stills: Live
Robin Trower: Bridge of SighsI think buying a nice set of headphones and a good headphone amplifier may have been the single best money I have spent on my system ...um, maybe ever.

...while BBQ'g some Sousa and/or Scott Joplin. Love that Gunther Schiller of The Fourth Of July!
A Fifth is also good on the Fourth.
If you're celebrating in Scotland, and have a boat, you could take your Fifth along while you do The Fourth on a Firth.
