Hey Everybody.I just purchased a brand new Clearaudio Maestro cart and this is what the tip looks like under my USB microscope. I know it isn't 100% clear. I think the cheapie I purchased from China isn't very good...but doesn't the 'weld' seem bit sloppy to you?

If it sounds good I wouldn't worry about it.
Tubes and vinyl are preferred.
Cheers, Jeff
You guys worry a lot about shit like that?
yup.

...a Sound Smith "contact line" stylus mounting, on a ruby cantilever.
There was similar consternation from users of the Jico SAS stylii who didn't like all the glue. It looks odd, but performance is amazing.
That is a good shot. What did you use to get the diamond so clear?
Wish I could take credit. That shot is off the VinylEngine website.
That does look familiar. Thank goodness. Thanks for the post!

You know that is a good question. I have a cheapie USB microscope and it doesn't tell me what magnification I'm using. I'd imagine there would be a well to tell, but I don't know what it is.
I had a panic attack too when I first saw 'the glob.' The boron cantilever looks totally different than my ol' one on my Sumiko BPS. Same thing for me... sounds great and tracks well so I can't complain. One has to take it on faith that your records aren't getting 'grooved out.' Reputable companies like Clearaudio, Benz, etc.... we're probably safe.
I freaked a little bit when I first noticed it, but then folks reassured me that it's okay. (I'm talking about the blob, not the SRA/VTA.)

The thing that stands out to me is that Clear Audio decided to go with a bigger gauge thin wall tube for stiffness. They are using a lot of adhesive to support the diamond.
It is hard to say if this is a nude stylus since most of it is covered in the goo. It could be a bonded stylus and the portion below all covered up.
In my experience it is good to let it break in and then try some vertical tracking angle experiments to see where vocalists sound the most natural.
Good luck!

Thank you all for your replies. Adhesive would be a better way to describe the attachment rather than weld. Thank you Tubesforever.I'm glad a few of you saw what I saw.
I will trust in Clearaudio as I have before and let it break in a bit before playing around.
Thanks again for your help everyone.
Happy July 4th!

The stylus rake angle doesn't appear to be correct to me, but it's really impossible to tell for sure with that blurry photo.
Have you played it? How does it sound? Does it seem to track the groove properly without causing any noticeable damage?
Good luck,
John Elison
Yea, I'm not sure why, but it does not focus any better than that.
Sounds great. No problems tracking. I just don't like the look of the 'weld' that holds the actual diamond on the cantalever.
So don't look at it through a micoscope, really.
If it sounds great I would not worry about it.
is scary, but the stylus looks ok, as much can be made out on this picture. Try different angles and see if anything looks real rough near the tip of the diamond.
