The first two pictures are a new out of the box Denon 103r and the last two are of a Denon 103r that I have had for about two years. I started getting distortion on certain records like I had a dust clod and I thought it was from wear so I ordered a replacement. I also purchased a digital microscope and compared the two, that is when I noticed the chunk that was taken out by something otherwise the stylus looks fine to me. The only thing I use on my stylus is cleaner and a brush and Magic Eraser. When using the ME I am careful not to make any lateral movements and lower the stylus using the cuing lever.
Any thoughts?

The last photo clearly shows build-up of something. A 3-D view would help - I use an old dissecting microscope at 80x.
A small piece of magic eraser repeatedly dropped on the stylus works most of the time.
To rid the diamond of really stubborn debris, a flat toothpick used like a bow on a string will remove almost anything that's stuck. The weight of the toothpick is all the pressure you need.

I'd send it to Denon, my guess is there was some inherent flaw, chances are they'll replace it as there doesn't seem to be any indication of poor care, rough handling etc.
Hopefully you are aware of the fact that view like this (Jewelers loupe level)
are useless as far as actual meaningful stylus wear (wear polish) assessment.
This is an example of what you should be looking at for wear assessment
which requires both adequate resolution and proper lighting

Thanks Fred. I have read here that regular magnification is not adequate for determining wear but a least I was able to see the damage, if I hadn't found that I would have sent it off for inspection. I was going to send it to Sound Smith but maybe I'll try Denon first. Thanks again.

are the hardest known substance, but they are brittle. Even with careful use it is possible for an accidental drop of the stylus to create a chip.

Isn't this the first contact point for the stylus? I think debris crust, like cheese or dirt. Diamond should cut it, but a flawed man-made diamond might fracture.
My two cents.

That maybe what it is but aren't these man made diamonds?
