The blue DiscDoctor replacement strips come out to around $20 with shipping for 2 pairs. I'm sorry, but that is just a little absurd for 4 pieces of felt. I dry brush all my vinyl I'm about to clean on a junker Technics and still the felt strips pick up debris that get imbedded in them after not a while lot of use (the VPI isn't even my primary cleaning machine, I just use it at my lake house).
Does anyone know of any cheaper alternatives? I will see if I can find the paper adhesive backing, but they are made by 3M.

I have been buying mine from a seller on eBay, you can get 2 for under 10 bucks. They seem to be same quality as the Disc Doctor ones. I have bought about 2 pairs at this point with no issues, they work well. Hope this helps!
I am currently using the disc doctor replacements and they work ok. It's hard to align them just right though, so to not have too much vacuum that it stops the record and yet enough that it removes all rinse water in 3 revolutions.
Since, I am still up in the air about sticking with them and bought a spare vpi tube. Also, I use 2 tubes. One for cleaning and the other for rinse only.
MintLP has a good tutorial showing removal of old velvet ribbon, and intallation of new one. I have used this procedure several times, it is easy to do and stays in place.
i would just buy a new vacuum tube...in the years i had a 16.5 i would always clean the felt gently with a toothbrush and distilled water after each session. after originally buying a second tube and holder for the final rinse i think i only bought one replacement tube in all the time i had a 16.5.....and i still use that one for my vpi hw 27 now
If so....
I go to a fabric store and buy the exact same velvet trimming that came with my 16.5
For a few bucks you get yards of it. Cut lengths to size and apply w/a thin layer of contact cement (after cleaning remnants of previous gluing as best as you can to avoid excess build up).
Thank you, I'll give this a try the next time the tube wand's strips get too dirty.
For those suggesting 2 arm tubes, that will not the solve the problem that the one that comes into contact with the record the first time (the one that has the actual cleaning fluid) will still get debris embedded in it. It will just mean the second arm tube will be clean for a lot longer.

The area under the velvet strips shows abrasion, but so what? It isn't seen and the integrity of the suction tube certainly is not affected. Been doing it for over 20 years.
Years ago when they were fairly cheap I bought a total of three suction tubes. I always have a fresh tube ready to go when the velvet on the one I'm using wears and/or starts to peel off.

My DD brushes came with extra felt pads, and I am still using the original brushes/pads for 8 years and 1000 LP's at least. Are they the same material, (you'd think)? I have an extra tube that I could try it on. Looks like 1 pad should be enough for at least 2 tubes.
P
replacement pads cut-to-size on my DIY Vac and they work great.
