We've seen the gorgeous big rig systems everybody has, (truely a spectacular sight by the way) Now let's see the on the cheap Patio, Garage or other small systems that you have set up for under $500.00 I'm sure some guys here have some cheap projects they'd like to show off.I'll start out with my little patio system I'm playing with right now.
This is a Voice of music console ripped apart, I boxed the two tube pre, Trimmed the 6BQ5 st amp, Spruced them up with some parts. On top of the pre is my phono pre, It's a home brew I built, It's a Conrad Johnson PV6 phono circuit Built With a tube power supply. Next is an old rim drive Pioneer PL-25 WITH A Shure M3D, and a yard sale Sansui tuner and a nothing cd player. all powering an old pair of Boston Acoustic A-200 speakers. Fun little system to have a cup of coffee with, for well under $500 Oh and by the way, The shelf is a home depot plastic shelf fitted with some painted wood to dress it up.

Unfortunately, cost is higher that $500. Well, it was in Australian Dollars.
Cowon J3 - AU$300
Etymotic hf5 w/ custom moulds (AU$199 for etys, AU$150 for moulds)
Majority of music is in FLAC format or 320k Mp3

My "mile high club" system.
;^)
when you jump down the escape chute. You had better inflate the jacket inside too, so none of that equipment or records will try to fall out of your desperate hands.
I am also worried that there isn't enough room for the sound system and your $7 carbohydrate meal on that tray table.
Very nice! Great way to pass the time.
Better than any other in flight entertainment i've come across.
Ha, you're even more crazy than I am... Nice headphones, though.
:-)
I've just ordered one of these for the bedroom. No analog, but the size works for me. Just needed the CD player and iPod dock and some decent sound.
The Yamaha is cool, what's the model number?

Michael,
It's a TSX-130. It has real wood on the top. I thought it looked pretty classy. I was going to go for a Cambridge unit until I started seeing all the bad reviews due to the cd mechanism.
I'm glad I didn't do the Cambridge because a little more research led me to this unit. Much more elegant and the sound is supposed to be great for a bedroom sized space.
I'll have it next Monday (or sooner) so I'll be able to judge for myself.
Being big into lossless I'm not much on mp3 but I really like the idea of this thing. If ipods were lossless and had mega memory I and plenty of others would have one. I just dig the compactness of this Yammer. Thanks for responding.

It wouldn't surprise me to see Yamaha come out with a model in the next year or two that supports one of the lossless formats. It does have a USB port to attach other devices.
My wife and I like to listen to audio books and this is one of very few units that not only supports MP3 Cds, but also Windows Media files on CD. Seems they're on top of things. There may be hope for the lossless music formats.
my saturday night system , when the solder is flowing and Hot Jazz Saturday Night is on the radio, just showing one speaker in the pic, has both cassette and MD playback and record....

When you own 6 vintage receivers, 6 turntables, 6 sources, and 13 sets of speakers, you can build quite a few sub-$500 rigs! All my stuff was carefully chosen for price versus performance, using every discount advantage available to me, from retail to CL to GW to GC to SA to,...well, you get the idea...I do the painted wood deal too, for my big wire racks using stair step landings, really nicely cut and rounded on the front edges, and I paint it black, black as coal. I want to see the sun...(I digress...)

No earplugs here...or earbuds.

Dual 621 TT, Marantz CD40 CDP, Technics amp, Mission 760i monitors. All bought in 1 day on the flea markets. Ok add a headshell adapter and Shure M75 cart/stylus for the Dual. And the 621 has the Dual automatics blues. The drawer of the Marantz CDP has to be opened and closed manually. But hey, what do you want for a few tenners!
"The torture never stops"Greetings Freek.
My computer audio system consists of:
NAD 7060 receiver $35 from the pawn shop
Modified Hafler DH101 preamp, purchased more than 15yrs ago for $150
AR-XA TT, $75 Ebay purchase
Shure M97xe, $50 Amazon purchase
Near 10m speakers, purchased more than 15yrs ago for $200
MAudio Audiophile USB A-DAC, $125
TT is connected to the Hafler, then to the ADAC, then to computer and NAD for monitoring.
Total cost $600 / a little over
Best,
Ross
The 'restored vintage' system I have in the basement makes fun music. I don't have a decent image of the system but I have shots of bits and pieces...
Marantz 2230 receiver (recapped, ready for another 35 years). $150 + recapping.
Sony PS-T3 semi auto DD table, $12
OR
Thorens TD 150 MK II, *free* before rehab and modifications
Dynaco A25, *free.* I built new cabinets to replace irrepairable original cabinets and added super tweeters but I already had that stuff. I did spend a little money on decent Obbligato capacitors and decent copper binding posts, maybe $50.

That is one cool system, reminds me of my 1060/A25/ARxa/Shure M95 from years ago, sorry now I gave most of it away. That 2230 is gorgeous (so are the A25s and the TT, all I can say is WOW)!
Thanks a bunch! I've had no second thoughts about getting the Marantz recapped (jeez, it's been 3.5 years now), and I love the "two martini" presentation it produces with the A25s. The tuner section sounds very good also, and my kids like using the system without any supervision or worries :)
OK.
32 gigabyte SDHC card, all .wav files mostly ripped from vinyl.
Sweet Guys, Keep'em coming, Their trash is our treasure. I had to sit and stare at that damm Pioneer pl-25 for over an hr before I figured out why It didn't do it's auto thing. But I guess that's why I got it so cheap. Speaking of cheap, This is a Major award I recieved for my jacket.(grin)

Harmon Kardon HK 730, Advent3 speakers and a Pioneer PL 115D TT with a Grado green cartridge sounds wonderful especially for jazz
No vinyl ...BUT, all of the tapes are of records.
Yamaha CA-410II, integrated amp
Yamaha TX-550, tuner
Nakamichi 480, cassette deck
ADS L300, speakers
This system is in the workshop in my garage and is mostly used when I'm cleaning records or doing something in the driveway, like washing a car.
Dean.
reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
Here's a second system I had set up for a while. All gear was in working condition when purchased. I could've added a CD player, cassette deck, and Reel To Reel deck and still kept total outlay under $100.
Pioneer SX-950 Receiver $10 yard sale
Boston Acoustic T-930 Speakers $40 yard sale
Kenwood KD-3070 Turntable w/Ortofon OM-30 Cartridge $10 flea market
But are you really getting the full soundstage, not to mention the macro and micro dynamics, that Rappin' Rodney LP is capable of?
The Pioneer for ten bucks was the deal. Looks a lot like my Toshiba SA-7100 "super-receiver."
beautiful, I love the sound of good vintage gear. I also have a Marantz 1122DC hooked up to Fisher X66B speakers and a Pioneer PL 55X turntable that sounds so nice together all that was around 250.00
