In Reply to: Heathkit EA-1, EA-2 and EA-3, what's the difference? posted by EL84 on August 24, 2004 at 21:24:29:
Power, AFAIK. The EA-1 is 3 wpc, I think. I have an EA-2 and it rated at 12 wpc. I think the EA-3 is 15 wpc. It's kind of like the difference between an EICO ST40 (20 wpc) and ST70 (35wpc). The outputs on both amps are four 7591s, but the ST70 gets more power out of them (and, presumably, more heat and a shorter life as a consequence).
Follow Ups:
as in not really close. First, the EA-1 is a single ended amplifer, and the EA-2 and EA-3 are push-pull amplifiers, totaly different circuits and sound. Though they all use EL84 output tubes, they use different drivers. Second, the Eico ST-40 does use 7591's and is also an itegrated amp like the Heathkits mentioned. The Dynaco ST-70 is a power amplifer and uses EL34 output tubes.Take care,
I never said anything about a Dynaco ST-70. The EICO ST70 is an integrated amp (like the ST40). It uses four 7591s in a push-pull configuration.
