I live Dayton Ohio. I purchased some Transistors from a local online electronics liquidator, less than 10 miles from my house. The parts went to Cincinnati and then back to Dayton. 100 mile round trip.

I have seen that. 100 miles away in MI and goes to PA first.
That's because the big carriers use "hub & spoke" routing. You might recall in the early days FedEx had ONE hub - Memphis. ANYTHING sent FedEx (it was Federal Express back then) - even say from Chicago to Milwaukee just 90 miles north - would go via Memphis. Now they have many more hubs as does USPS, and the cost of routing it through an efficient hub is actually lower than point-to-point routing.
