AK feels like a bunch of exjocks and band groupies trying to top each other with stories and "scores". Regular participants are among the first to ridicule and among the last to offer helpful advice.
AG seems almost schizophrenic; on one hand a bunch of neurotics who want constant validation of their choices, and on the other a bunch of sharks circling each other for first dibs on a fresh meal.
SH feels like fiefdom where everyone has to tread lightly for fear of angering the local prince.
There there is AA; where all the misfits who don't fit anywhere else gather to discuss audio.
Just my opinion.....
Best, Ross
Follow Ups:
I have little to no experience with other audio forums.
I like it here. No need to go elsewhere.
I'm a misfit among misfits.
Dean.
reelsmith's axiom: Its going to be used equipment when I sell it, so it may as well be used equipment when I buy it.
The proper term there is "scroes". :)
I would like to add to that if you will.
I came here a long time ago because of the wars going on at rec.tubes.audio. As I was, and still am a novice it was hard to take the battles, rants and undermining going on with the nasty elite on that blog.
Back in the day the Tube Asylum was just that, guys like me finding old tube gear and bringing it back or learning how to improve circuits and experiment a bit to learn. Dynaco gear ruled then. Present day.... the Tube Asylum is about identifying which tube the dealer stiffed a buyer on.
Tube DIY, which took the place then evolved into it's own has calmed down for now with some good interchange, a few guys building and exploring and few others willing to guide them. I see a few names from rec.tubes pop up now and again just to be their miserable selves, right Douglas?
I tried AK for awhile and their Tube Forum was comprised of crotchety old men stuck on 40's technology, nihilists to say the least. The SS, turntable and Klipsch forums seemed completely different. I quit dropping in when they shouted down Jim McShane, ranting that Jim didn't know anything.
DIY Audio is generally more than I can stay with. Some really good projects like the one Twystd turned us on to at Vinyl a few weeks ago come out of there however.
To the point Audio Asylum seems to be what is left of the middle ground.
FlaCharlie's statement about the traffic is so true as well. Maybe we are all just getting old and deluding ourselves?

AG? SH? I'm not familiar with those.
Not sure about other forums, or even all the boards on AA, but traffic here has dropped off seriously over the years.

all the best,

My opinion is AA participants are serious audiophiles and have a lot of experience experimenting for best sound. As mentioned the K40Y-9 capacitor is the best bang for the buck and plays seriously with much more expensive capacitors. The K40Y-9 was mentioned by Michael Samara at least 15 years ago, but unheard of two years ago at Audiokarma Fisher forum. To me that is mind blowing. (sorry to post again, but.......)
