I posted about this a while ago, compared 8B to Citation 11 with ESL-63's, both updated. So far I like the Citation better but sometimes it takes me a while to reach a final conclusion. Airtime feel free to contact me offline if you want more info.
Follow Ups:
I contacted the seller of the 8b and he already sold it for $1500. I'm actually relieved. After the excitement stumbling onto a 8b I could afford (Audio Classics asking $6k) I got caught up in my 20 year desire to own one.
Truth be told my VTA ST-70 with Gold Lion KT-88's and EH 12BH7 in driver board - not much else is going to touch that. Every time I turn that amp on I think to myself "So where AM I going with another amp"? It's just nostalgic collecting and I just don't have the desire to do that any more.
Between my VTA ST-70, my precious Sherwood S-5000 and for a change up my NEW NAD C275BEE amp - where am I going?
However one day I may want to add just one vintage tube amp in my collection before I quite. That choice for vintage tubed amp is the Citation V. I'll look for one of those next year.
I've been slowly selling off some of my vintage amps as well. How many do we actually need? A collection or hoarding?
One amp I do regret selling five or six years ago was a rebuild Citation V. I don't plan on getting another though. I'm selling both my Citation II's.
I got on the 8B kick after hearing a number of things, all second hand. First was about an interview with Saul Marantz, when they asked him what he had at home, answered 8B.
Second was ths story that Sid Smith, Marantz transformer designer hand wired the prototype, liked what he heard and sent it out for production. He didn't like what he got back and hand wired every 8B transformer, which has an unusual design described here:

The third was a friend for 30 years, all of his career Hifi, sales and marketing. He heard a lot of systems and mentioned the sweetest sound he ever heard was 8B playing through Quad ESL's.
What I primary listen to are ESL63's, low-mid volume classical. I went on a quest to find a complimentary amplifier and tried a lot of them including 8B both stock and upgraded. I like the combination, but I also found others I like and tend to swap them in and out. The ones I like all have strengths and weaknesses. And some are subtle, have to listen for a while, months at times to appreciate them.
have you tried a Music Reference RM-10?
Happy Listening
I haven't, but I am a fan of 6BQ5's, so much emotion. What I do swap in are updated Heathkit UA2's. The ESL63's are biamped with subs, so the 6BQ5's do drive them, but I still notice a difference with higher power amplifiers.
The 8b is a great amp- however i will agree that it's elan has driven the value beyond its worth-
there are other amps out there -
Happy Listening
