Nice looking cabinets. It's probably worth your time to fix the woofer surrounds and replace that electrolytic cap with a new electrolytic. I would not replace it with a film cap as it will change the voicing and will probably make the treble too bright. However, bypassing the new electrolytic with a small (0.1 or 0.068 uF)film cap may smooth the sound a bit.
My "trick" that was referred to is to add a series resistor to the speaker to emulate the higher source impedance of tube amps if you are going to use a solid state amp. Try resistors in the 0.5 to 1 ohm range.

Haha, yes I did that and noticed the brightness right away. I have some electrolytic caps that I will try.
If I do your resistor trick with my ss amp, do you see any benefit to getting tubes for it?
I am using a HK a401. Nice warm sounding unit.
