If the last didn't bid,I would have. It's no doubt a blessing that I lost but it would have been nice to have one of these.

The Cit II and MC275 ?
I've always wondered about the SA1000. And the Fisher 200....a 6550 monoblock.
Thanks,
Ross
I would imagine quite favorably..The SA1000 ca be McShaned as well if you look at the power supply and I think another choke and and some tighter regulation on the G2 supply and this amp will run with the best of them.I am guessing because the Citation 2 and the Mc275 set the bar pretty high.

affect sound quality to the extent that different amps sound more like each other than before the changes ?
Thanks,
Ross

The McShane changes bring out the potential design of each amp because you now have a power supply with a lower impedance and a lot of more joules of energy. This allows the famous circuits in the MACs,Citations, and Fishers to be able to operate at their full potential as dictated by the original design.Back in the day,it wasn't as big of an issue because you didn't have to worry about digital noise everywhere and the listening material of the day wasn't quite as dynamic or have the signal to noise ratios we have today. There was higher dynamic material but they didn't have the overall dynamic range of CDs and LPs that we have today.

I hated that tube in the Quicksilver monos way back. Glassy, brittle, unreliable.
Cool amp. I've never seen one.
As you probably know, 8417 tubes are unobtainium. I'm sure it could be biased to run on EL-34 or 6550 though.
To Mr. Samra.
Methinks he remains comfortably ahead of the curve.

Sorry Mike
I have NO 8417s believe or not..Since I didn't win the amp,my net worth of 8417s will still remain the same...ZERO.

"I'm sure it could be biased to run on EL-34 or 6550 though." Biased , possibly. Driven, probably not w/o major pre-driver/driver redesign. And then you wouldn't have the SA1000 any longer.
The 8417 was the last of the consumer grade 100W power tubes released. It combined the power capabilities of the 6550 with the extraordinarily easy drive requirements of the 7591. Actually, in all important respects, the 8417 is equal to two 7591s in parallel but with somewhat greater voltage capabilities. IIRC, Fisher advertised that the 8417 was originally created for this specific amp but a few other mfgrs used it too. Both GE and Sylvania mfgd them but the Sylvanias were best by far. GEs had a tendency to run away at the slightest provocation. Guess which version is unobtainium.

You can run a 6550 or an EL34 as they are relatively close in plate resistance and plate to plate loading at the same B+..The only issue you may have is,you would probably have to mod the voltage amp or driver to make sure you are swinging enough clean driver signal, being the 6550 takes 3 times as much drive as a the 8417.The EL34 also takes considerably more to drive it but looking at the driver circuit,it is probably just a matter changing the plate load or cathode resistors,or maybe the grid leak resistors on the output tubes..I'm going to look at a schematic in a bit.

Michael have you ever heard or worked on one? I've often wondered how it compared with the cit II.Steve T

the vest push pull amp I have heard. ( with all original tubes ) The amp is in a mint condition even with the original tag attached.
I have heard or worked on one.The 8417 is a very easy tube to drive but they are mot made anymore.I'm sure the amp is very good due to the incredible Freed iron.

Whew! Close. Like wandering into a high-stakes poker game you can't afford.
But a really clean Fisher amp, that one.
I like that amp I can't lie.

But Michael $2500???? That's a lot of money!!!
Sim
I would have gotten it for 1780.00.If I did want to win it,I probably would have had to spend 2500 at least.
