Those gray caps in them are oil caps.Most people change them out because when they leak DC,tubes will run hot because they pass DC to the tube grids.I haven't seen the Japanese receivers run hot once they working properly.No hotter than any other tubed receiver.

I think by "run hot", he meant that they went trough tubes too quickly.

Hi, I think the rat nest picture was the poster child for getting circuit boards into use, even though a lot of vacuum tube guys want point to point wiring....Mark K.
Boards are cleaner, but most of the boards back then were not the best quality.
